Some quite explosive updrafts occurring along the trough line up here. Thunder now too.

Yay... us northerners are starting to see something! http://www.bellmereweather.net/lightning.asp

It is trying desperately hard to rain here, but still nothing hitting the ground out of those radar echoes.

Looks nice up there Mega. Only real part in SE Qld with quality low level moisture. Dew points are in the 14-16 C range with temps in the low 20's. That would give surface-based CAPE of around 1000 J/kg. Excellent deep-layer shear too! With I was up in Harvey Bay.

Further south looks quite uninteresting. Moist mid's and dry lowers, not a good combo.

Currently driving between Glen Innes and Tenterfield headed home (Brisbane) nothing but scattered rain and virga here, although there was a tower I saw trying to gain a footing but went nowhere. Should be in Warwick by about 1630/1700 so will defs be keeping a tab on things.... smile

Great mammatus shots from the Goldie!!! smile

All over here now. Was a lovely little storm though, plenty of CGs for a while there (seem to have died right off over the last 5 minutes) and heavy(ish) rain. I knew there was a chance but I thought it would be simply too dry, so I'm happy we ended up with something after all!

I love to see some photos from further north. GFS hasn't really nailed it today. First off, surface winds are N'ly where the storms are firing (not NW'ly). Secondly, low-level moisture and CAPE appear to be better than forecast.

Interesting that the storm west of Moore Park is near stationary considering the strength of the mid-level winds. Shame the equilibrium level is very low again today, though not unexpected.

I have never seen this many echos on the radar go over the top of me and not receive a single drop of rain!

It has dryed out that much over winter that the beautiful strong smell of rain has returned!! Love that smell. However not enough rain to register in the gauge.

What are people's opinions? Take the Moore Park cell, here is a GFS forecast sounding replotted to a more representative temp/dew point-

http://soundings.bsch.au.com/skew-t.html...dp=16&mixop=usr

Taking the Bundaberg surface obs, surface winds were N'ly to around 20 knots. Therefore, the low-level shear would be better than shown on the model sounding. While CAPE is not very high, there is actually a lot of low-level CAPE. Finally, LCL is not overly high (<1000 m). That sounds like an excellent setup really. Strong deep-layer and low-level shear, lots of low-level CAPE and relatively low bases (provided there isn't too much dry air just above the surface).
