Why is snow so rare in NZ also? That evil ocean called the Southern Ocean kills it off but this time, for this rare occasion, the evil was defeated? And snow at SEA LEVEL, and we'd be lucky to get it below 800m here!!
Look at all the snow the Northern Hemisphere gets in their winter! They oughta share it around a bit, bring it here to Australia!

What is "summer" anyway? Sunshine? Cloudless skies? or high temperatures?
It is really the Hot Season from about December to March, but we get sunshine, cloud or rain at random times all year round, here.

I heard about the snowfalls in NZ, very impressive for places that can go years without snow.
What's the coldest daytime maximum recorded during this cold snap?

What's the coldest daytime maximum recorded during this cold snap? There have presumably been much lower values at high altitude and in the south, but Wellington's 5.1 was impressive for a site not too far above sea level. Auckland (8.2) had its coldest day on record.

I'll be in New Zealand during early January (assuming nothing absolutely crazy happens in the meantime, lol). Going on a 13 day cruise leaving Sydney on Dec 29th. Stopping at the Bay of Islands (24.4/15.4, 90mm), Auckland (23.3/15.3, 75mm), Tauranga (23.9/14.5, 74mm), Napier (24.4/14.6, 48mm), Wellington (20.3/13.4, 72mm), Christchurch (23.0/12.0, 42mm), Dunedin (18.9/11.5, 72mm) and "scenic cruising" about the Fiordland National Park (18.9/10.4, 717mm!!!). Hoping for some fine and warm weather (Max temps 20ºC+) for most of the trip.

Tornado hits Auckland
A tornado has hit the west Auckland suburb of Avondale.
The fire service received reports around 1pm that a tornado was moving through the suburb.
Northern communications shift manager Jarron Phillips says Wairau Ave sustained the most damage and was closed.
One house was hit by lightning, Phillips confirmed. Powerlines had fallen onto other homes in the area.
Several homes and blocks of flats were damaged, Phillips said.
Senior station officer for Avondale fire Esitone Pauga said people were leaving a flea market in the area at the time the tornado hit.
Pauga said they were keeping people out of affected homes for safety reasons.
Power was still on in the area and residents were not too frightened, Pauga said.
Mark Hackett, who moved to Auckland from Christchurch to escape the earthquakes, said his family's garage was destroyed but luckily his family was safe.
Fire services said the tornado also hit the Ash St area.
Six fire engines in total attended Ash St and Wairau Ave.
There were no reports of injuries.
MetService issued a moderate thunderstorm warning for the upper North Island region, including Auckland, this morning, with gusts of up to 100km/h, small hail and localised heavy rain forecast.

Will you going anywhere near New Plymouth or Taranaki? Or Henderson (west Auckland)? My parents came from there, like to see how its changed since we left. Chance of any photos? No unfortunately, will not be going to that side of the North Island (would love to see the iconic Mt Egmont one day). Fairly sure we won't go near the western parts of Auckland either, as I expect we'll be touring mainly around the central Auckland area (inc. Mt Eden). I will definately take photos during the trip, and will share a couple of them here on my return. BTW, I plan to take two cameras with me just on the highly unlikely chance that something goes wrong with one of them. Would hate to get that far and not be able to take photos!

The city of Wanganui recorded 972 hPa early on Saturday morning and gusts of around 80 knots (150 km/h) were recorded in some more exposed places. Shame there isn't a WS near the worst hit town of Patea. Very good blog/analaysis about the 'bomb' from MetService can be found here.

Interesting that the term "Bomb" is a valid one, I thought it was like the "Mini Cyclone", "Mini tornado" type terms.
That was an interesting blog/analaysis

Been a bit quiet in here lately... As I'm heading to Queenstown in mid-July I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the quality of the upcoming ski season?

The developing El Nino points to a reasonable ski season for Queenstown. Hopefully the region can catch a good dumping next week but its early days in the models to be sure.
