I don't know if I have mentioned it before but Turfies in the frostier areas are now turning away from the expensive broadleaf weed control measures to using a half dose of roundup in the middle of winter on the drought tolerant turf species that tend to go dormant. This also controls pesky Winter grass and Rye grass also. Works a treat..... I have heard of this being done on a few golf courses but have never done it where i work. I do spray out winter grass on my couch lawn with roundup in winter, dont blanket spray it though.

You can cover spray as long as the Couch is fully dormant.... I tend to wait for a series of frosts.. We never really get a series of frosts here But it does go dormant enough that spot spraying doesn't do much damage. Might be time to get some poa check from work as the winter grass is currently going nuts in my yard.

I've been noticing that MCPA and Metsulferon (my favourite broadleaf poison cocktail) knocks St Johns Wort when it's young and soft, but nowhere can I find it mentioned in the official info. Puzzled by that. Anyone else had results on St Johns using that (rather than Starane, Grazon or Roundup)?

I didn't know that! The buggers. I just went out and paid a fortune for more Grazon, too. But I'd noticed that, when broadspraying bad infestations of things like Pattos, the resident St Johns would keel over (literally, the tops look like Swan's necks) and get all burnt.
That's really annoying that they do that, surely if a chemical kills certain plants, they should tell us? MCPA/Metsulferon is a damn sight cheaper than Grazon (and certainly Starane, which is extortionate).

DSMA/dicamba mix is another good weedkiller if you have a couch lawn. The DSMA nukes annoying summergrass's like Mullumbimby and paspalum.

I used metsulfuron to control nut grass in my couch lawn. It did a good job, now I have 5 less roses to prune as well

Im not sure how many of you have an ACDC (Agricultural Chemical Distribution Control) licence? I personally deliver/train this licencing workshop in QLD and if you do know, the key to the whole system is to "Leave chemical use as a last resort", its a shame to see so many people using residual chemicals over the much more environmentaly friendly Glyphosate 360...! Good to hear tho that there are 5 less Roses in our country..! Hahahaha

Glyphosate is not very good at controlling nut grass, it would have controlled the couch tho.
It was the first time I had used the metsulfuron in that way, so now I know my limits.
I was using metsulfuron to kill unwanted fruit trees

gly is not so good for widespread weeds when you want to keep your scarce grass. It might work in places that get rain, but in the ACT region, you'll have those bare spots for years. I rarely use it... in fact for me, it's for serrated tussock and nothing else. It kills everything.

Glyphosate is a last resort when talking about turf situations. Winters are barely cool enough to use glyphosate on couch here, and if you have a grass that doesnt go dormant, i would not advise using it at all.

6L/ha is the rate required to kill couch with the 360g/L (from memory) I bet you would wipe out a lot of other weeds at 2L/Ha and not worry the couch even in summer.
I know I have seen a lot of live couch and dead fruit trees from Glyphosate sprays.

At work i think we go 1-2l of 360g/l product per 100l/water. The low rate wont kill the couch, but it makes it look really dodgy. The problem is, if you do kill the couch you get a bare patch that fills in with weeds very quick.
The more you spray and kill, the more open space you get for weeds. On a golf course, spraying weeds is a never ending job. My boss has never been game enough to try blanket spray roundup in winter plus these days its not all that cheap anyway.

Couch is pretty tough when you use selective sprays , some of those fancy turf varieties are wimps and cant handle the selectives as well.
I was just thinking we could hunt around and find roundup resistant couch on places that have been constantly using roundup on couch, but then we may be creating a "Frankenweed"

Wasn't me creating that one.
It is a good weed tho, its worked out how to survive and thrive.
You can get it by just buying potting mix that is weed free.
You get the weed seeds for free , it took me a long time to work out what that weed free meant

There's already FRANKENWEEDS out there.. Creeping Oxalis is one of the worst!!!! And Wireweed. I have a jug of Kamba 500, just for that stuff. Hey, question about wetting agent... I've been using cheap-o detergeant (dish stuff), as my family uses this special expensive stuff for the orchard, with negative ions or something, which I don't need for my weed activities. Is wetting agent for herbicide just detergeant, is it OK to just use the You'll Love Coles stuff or am I wasting my time and weed spray? I'm about to commence my war with the rampant St Johns Wort, armed with Grazon. almost a hundred bucks for a litre! OUCH. and I'll need more than a litre, that's only 4 tanks.
