So where are all these showers? I certainly wouldnt have wanted to be a forecaster the last few days. Get a storm friday night when it was meant to stay inland, didnt get a storm saturday when it was meant to go off, light rain and showers sunday night when it was meant to be fine, storms yesterday when not forecast, and mostly fine today when there are meant to be showers. Very complex weather situation lately.

yes some massive falls south of cairns, even cairns suburbs between 1 and 2 inches. as i mentioned earlier weird to be having such a decent easterly flow in october.
flow is expected to increase and become more easterly later today Gazza, i would expect the showers to increase gradually through the afternoon.
already seeing a few more echos appearing on the ranges.

Out delivering meals on wheels with Mrs SBT this morning at RSL Villas and Palleranda and it was white caps and dirty brown water everywhere off the beach. The winds was pretty heavy too, lots of sea spray being whipped up by the winds which will probably be picked up by Townsville Airport Radar.

Monsoon trough now down to 15N over SE Asia. This late season large high over southern Aust causing these strong winds here will most likely enhance the SE Asian monsoon and typhoon development, but may also hold back for a while the southern movement of the MT..

i have heard alot of people tell me that winds blow the rain away! well not really true, cairns and region are getting poured on right now. all to do with the coastal terrain and our fantastic (not) rain shadow.
afterall, rain in tropical cyclones doesnt get blown away.

79mm at the Cairns Airport from 9am. Typically that is far lower than the hill slopes. This AM and after midnight pure wet season intensity, wheelie bins floating down the streets in Edge Hill... it also brings on the typical crawl under the house to clear drains. Note for RWM... any further thoughts on when the MT will drop?

Boomer. Not yet. Will wait till current high moves on and see what effect this has in the NH.

As an aside, this current high and enhanced easterly stream may help further cool waters off the East Coast and maybe slow down a bit the onset of the much publicised ( not by me ) expected La Nina..

Do I trust that we are going to see some rain today or should I be going out and watering my new grass that I am trying to grow?

I originally posted this some years ago when i was having a fit of irits at the Townsville BoM. For those who have seen it already please skip the next post. For those who haven't make of it what you will but it is posted in an attempt of humor. grin

BoM Double Speak: Or how to make sense out of BoM predictions/observations for Townsville (Only).

Light to moderate showers means of sweat not rain and is ideal conditions to play cricket, just ask Trav.

Storms of discontent when they never arrive. The only moisture from the atmosphere you are likely to see is dripping from aircons.

Severe tropical storms mean you can safely plan to paint your driveway because there will be no rain what so ever.

Snow would mean Burdekin Snow or ash from the burning cane fields. (Anyone else remember the cane burning forecasts?)

Dry and Fine with a late change (of their mind) which by now you should all realise is completely wrong.

Humid with a cool change overnight means we don't have a clue what is happening but you will probably have to turn on your aircons anyway.

Winds from the north east to the south west at 10 to 30 knots means that again it will be either a bit windy or howling a gale but they don't know what direction they are coming from so they throw in a 180 degree prediction for a 50/50 chance of being right.

Observations
On any given day the temperature at Townsville Airport will be at least 4C but sometimes as much as 8C, cooler/hotter than anywhere any one actually lives, it will receive at a minimum of 100mm a month less rainfall, be slightly windier by a couple of knots but the wind direction may on occasions be correct.

Townsville Radar Is either a huge space invaders game that the boffins play with when the bosses knock off or an Irish version of a Lava Lamp.

Rain Periods We in Townsville equate this to Watering/Sprinkler Restrictions. (Currently level 2 so my Rain Periods would be Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday but not between 9.00am and 4.00pm)

SBT... Much of the above applies to Cairns. Re Cairns Airport. Inevitably it will read only about half the rainfall that actually hits the ground in the rest of Cairns (today is a classic example) and the temp will be considerably lower (they get those lovely sea breezes that skip off the mangroves... tho to be fair when there is no breeze the heat off the runway causes the opposite effect... these factors also cause the humidity to be wildly innacurate). Re severe tropical storms... most of the time they stall at Saddle Mountain and die.

well I am happy as a pig in... ooops! Um as happy as my ducks. That rain yesterday that appeared to hug the ranges well it also sat over my house. Her indoors said that on Monday the rain fell until 2pm. So this morning emptying the Nylex, I was pleasantly surprised by 34.5mm. I thought it were an anomaly but there were puddles in all the "wet season" places in the street and her indoors also said the rain came into the shed. This only happened on a handful of occasions last wet. Will have to re-dig the moat.

Ducks are happy smile
