On Sunday, at Kootingal more than 35 millimetres of rain fell, before a hail storm moved in, showering the town for well over half an hour. A short local news item that was on Prime7 last night:

Thanks for pointing this out.

Certainly looks reasonable to me, both time lapses show a bit of a clear slot around the supposed funnel which is what should happen.

But in saying that, in reality it was a small storm so you wouldnt expect it to have the intensity to really do something.

In many aspects of life size does not matter smile

Ive seen much smaller cells produce bigger hail and so forth, also seen clips from the states of f2-3 naders out of cells lucky to be a km in diameter and tiny dry looking cu's pump out massive amounts of lighting, they are each to there own really.

I havent been able to look over any obs, or models for that particular cell but i would be surprised if it fell within parameters to produce a touchdown within its short lifespan. MC Thomas or someone with similar knowledge of tornadogenisis would be good to hear a more detailed insight from. But looking at the available footage that has come forth thus far it would not surprise me the slightest if there was more then met the eyes. The second clip from Joesk also showed a horseshoe vortex or 2 so there was alot going on during that given cell. Towards the end of the clip the rotation was very nice looking for such a early storm into the season the scud being sucked up was great eye candy smile

Core puncher, I don't really consider myself an expert on tornadogenesis but thanks anyway for the compliment smile haha. Anyway, I tend to agree with you regarding storm size and tornado potential. It's true that in the US supercellular tornadoes have formed from rather anaemic storms.

I tend to think that the quality of low-level moisture was somewhat lacking with the Ballina storm. Dew points were only around 16C along the coast and dropped off rapidly further west. In addition, the richer moisture along the coast was probably only quite shallow. Other than that, it was really quite a solid set up.

Central Australia looks pretty amazing on the radar. Is there any chance of any of those cells moving in to SE QLD?

Good videos mate! Lots of hail out there. Must be incredibly large and deep cold pool happening at the time. Bit of hail fog coming around at Fishery Creek Bridge! Reminds me of Lismore hailstorm in 2007.

Another article from Coraki storms today, people are complaining that they aren't getting any assistance from SES due to lack of numbers of workers.

Just saw this beautiful picture of hail blanket at East Ballina!

See NBN news of the Coraki to Ballina supercell: http://www.nbntv.com.au/index.php/2011/09/26/ballina-and-corakai-clean-up-after-hailstorm/

Quite interesting by the amount of damage have been observed. Quite significant but pretty early to be that severe during mid to late September.

Ballina AP measured 81km/hr maximum wind gust with massive 6.7C drop in temperature within 10minutes of this storm. However, the airport was nowhere worst than Ballina Island, Ballina West and East Ballina has been experienced. I could say in relevant to the windspeed could have been easily reached 100km/hr at times. But it is unconfirmed due to lack of reporting here. I'm not there at the moment, but I wish.

Just a little report from the lightwings website with excellent photos!
http://australianlightwing.wordpress.com/2011/09/26/ballina-hail-storm-september-25th-2011/

EDIT: Just found amazing video thanks to Prime7 from Ballina of this massive wind damage was been observed at Coraki!
http://au.prime7.yahoo.com/n1/video/-/watch/26735636/super-storm/

You experienced storm chasers on this forum can comment on that. How strong were the winds blew at Coraki? It may have exceeded 100km/hr mark. So the shed is lost, batten to truss connection ripped off, fences down and trees stripped bare!

Thanks for the links Mattew, like others have mentioned it's good to hear no mention of minicyclones or minitornadoes! Some inaccuracies still are to be found though but maybe I am too pedantic. Wind speeds were obviously greater than 80 km/hr in places to do that kind of damage. I would be pretty confident on saying greater than 100 km/hr, just how much greater is the real question.

Not sure if anyone seen this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtdAwvFihz0&feature=related

It appears that is a super hailstorm of the decade since Sydney in April 1999?

Lets not get too carried away there Matt. There have been plenty of nice supercell hailstorms since the infamous Sydney Hailstorm of April 1999.

Yeah i agree macca ive been a part of quite a few hail storm cleanups lacally a few come to mind ie; Banora Point hail storm in about 02?? probably close to gorilla hail, Casino has had numerous Lismore had one about 3 years ago took us 4 days to get all roof jobs finished. Matt i think because of the time between hailstorms has been pretty sparce it may be clouding your memory.
Yeah good hail drifts but Nah definatly not hailstorm of the decade.
