Hi all,

John Barratt of The Weather Chaser website has developed a new radar archive of Bureau of Meteorology radar images.

All the radar images are permanently archived so you can link to loops on the forum and not have the link disappear over time. Data is available now back to December 2008 but will be added back to 2001 and earlier where available.

http://www.theweatherchaser.com/radar-loop

There are tools to help find active periods on the radar.

regards, Michael

Thanks Michael, that is a little gem! Unlike StrikeOne the radar data won't go away after 14 days. I'll certainly be looking over past events, hopefully it does eventually go back to 2001 because I'd love to see the radar echoes that caused the massive floods in March 2001 on the Macleay.

Thanks all for your comments, and Michael for making the post! While there is already a long list of things still to do (including adding older data), I am happy to hear any feedback/suggestions/problems any of you might have.

Yes, John will be adding images back that far though it will be very limited for the 512km images as they were subscription only up until Sep 2008.

In addition to Michael's comments, and to be more specific regarding older data, it looks something like this :

- March 2005 -> current : Almost all 128+256km Australia wide.
- September 2004 -> March 2005 : Most 256km radars country wide.
- 2001 -> September 2004 : A good deal from Melb, Yarrawonga, and Tasmania (West Takone). Unfortunately there isn't any for the rest of the country for this period. This was primarily due to the fact that bandwidth was WAAAY to expensive, and limited back then.

There will be some other ones archived, perhaps some from Melbourne Laverton in 2000, but probably not of any significant quantity. I will see what else I can find once this many body of data is available. Also note that there will certainly be some missing parts, either due to radar problems, internet problems, or other issues at the time. I plan to add a summary page for each site & product that will indicate exactly what date ranges are available for them, and with what sort of 'completeness' as a percentage of possible images.

In terms of time frames for availability, I would expect that 2007, 2006, & 2005 might take about a week *each* before they are ready, and then all the rest perhaps another week again.

I also have doppler wind radar archive that is pretty much complete for all the sites that have it since commencement. I am happy to hear peoples preferences for addition of older rain rate data sooner, or addition of the doppler wind radars sooner.

JB.

Been a long time between drinks, but *finally* there have been some updates here :

- All radars from around the nation are now available back to January 2007 where data is available, which is primarily all 128 & 256km radars.

- Doppler images for Melbourne, Brisbane & Adelaide are now available (have been for a little while now), and have been made available back to October 2007 for Melbourne, and September 2007 for Adelaide & Brisbane.

- Currently all of 2006 is being processed, and if time allows I hope to have these up by the end of the week, if not it may be another week or so.

- The same scale as you see on the BoM display has been added for the rain-rate & doppler images (Thanks to Michael Bath for pointing out this glaring ommision).

- 'Most active' days for a location has also been updated, and will hopefully be further expanded too (see the bottom of the page at a particular location).

Please let me know if you have any queries, comments, and/or requests.

Can the radar images be batch-downloaded, like you can do from the StrikeOne website??

This site is bookmarked for me, and I can't wait to see 2005 for Adelaide - when the daily rainfall record was broken in June and November with another good rainfall period. Well done, Djon! smile

Amazing work Djon, it is a great resource! One question though, I can't seem to view the radar sequence for the June floods. They come up right in the histogram box, but no rain actually shows...

I went to a BoM conference the other month and they showed an archived sequence of the June floods, so I am pretty sure the radar wasnt down, at least for the heavy stuff at the start.

Thanks, and keep up the good work! Jacob

Not currently. However, the pages are kept indefinitely, so should always be available.

Yes, they certainly are available, there was a problem overnight accessing some of the older images, which I have just fixed. So you now see the images, for all of the 8th (UTC) as well as other older images.

See : 128km Radar Loop for Newcastle, 00:00 08/06/2007 to 00:00 09/06/2007 UTC

Use the controls to adjust date range, distance range etc as desired.

Something else I haven't noted previously is that there are codes at the bottom right of the page to help paste in links to specific locations & date ranges which is what I used above (BBCode)

JB.

Thanks for that! I think that would have to be my favourite 2 days of radar activity. You can clearly see little eddies swirling off, and the best thing - an EYE! laugh

Data from 2006 is now available. On an initial look it seems quieter than subsequent years, but I am sure there are some interesting loops in there somewhere!

Some storms from around Canberra late in the year :

It definitely would have been quiet at all the SA radars, it was the 2nd driest year on record in Adelaide! But early May there was some decent rain, and the thunderstorms in late December make for some useful viewing.

Data going back to 10th of March 2005 is now online!

Digging a bit deeper into this data, there are a few areas that seem to have impossibly heavy rain, perhaps a calibration issue with the radar, or would it really have been this heavy?

For anyone that has been trying to access this for the last few days, and unable to, it is now running again! All the data from the period it was unavailable is however there (it was only a front-end issue).

Please let me know if you have any other issues or queries!

Thanks,
