Eastern half of state should see more showers and storms sprinkled around today and tomorrow. Saturday looks best chance for central parts and Christmas day, this morning, looks like the afternoon could be quite active and wet out east MAYBE stretching as far west as Melbourne. Boxing day starting wet out east but clearing to the far east by later in the day.

12mm for Rutherglen.

Had a really good light show most of the evening, (CCs), up to about 11.30. Storm cells went right around us, but interesting lightning display while having a few Bundies in the warm night air.
According to EU and BoM there will be two cyclones by Saturday one on the north east coast and one on the north west. So I would say there is probably no hope of gaining much tropical infeed with this system.

EC has raised it's eyebrows for a wet Christmas Day. Not the madness that GFS has been speculating but enough to suggest good falls are likely (especially with ACC, CMC coming on board).

Great feature about this system will be the levels of instability to ensure storms will be popping up after sunset. Great for the gun photographers on here! smile

ACC72HRS has the low /trough much further west now on Christmas morning. The "dance" continues.

Ruckle,

Just as long as Melbourne doesn't let me down. It's the only day of the year I get to lay on the lounge and do nothing ALL DAY to watch the start of the Boxing Day test. Marge even takes the kids out for the day. laugh

Some of you may already keep a keen eye on the link realtime2 here.
I find this fascinating to look at the moisture patterns and movements.

Hahahaha yes! I don't watch the Boxing Day cricket... but Melbourne had better not let ME down tomorrow and throughout the weekend, would love to have a few potentially severe thunderstorms around for Christmas! smile

Trough looks to have slowed down a little bringing Christmas day into play a little closer to central parts. Saturday looking iffy on all but GFS due to warming uppers. Current actual conditions explaining this latest variation of the models. Low at 500hpa sitting over SE NSW and just into VIC, not really moving too much

Storms for most of Vic's W 1/2 Sat, and E 1/2 Sun seem to be the go on latest runs and BOM forecasts.

EC still giving us 10-12mm here so no whinges (until I get too jealous of the storm posts elsewhere and my weak personality leads me to lament in public wink ).

The cyclonic systems have abrupted the potential moisture inflow for us from yest onwards. Dont blame the models... (unless you can invent a model to accurately predict cyclone formation > 6 days out smile ). Let alone two at the same time.

Just a quick question.. Does any one know if it will be sunny tommorow at around 12pm? i don't want to be swimming outside with no sun.

Thanks in advance.

Tommy, you live near me and the Tullamarine WZ 48hr forecast has "mostly cloudy" from 9am with chance of shower at midday and intermittent rain around 3pm. Could be the odd storm thrown in there, but I am really not sure of any of them. The forecast rainfall for our area has changed a couple of times now 5-10 ml expected.

0.01%. Not looking like the best area for storms the next couple of days, but wouldn't be too surprised to see storms anywhere xmas eve/xmas day.

Yeah meso could be widespread, could be zero. Eastern Highlands continue to be the only good bet.

Brewed up nicely over the foothills of the ranges to our N early arvo but all disapated by late arvo. Deep distant grumbles could be heard here mid arvo (which tempted me to record it as a "storm" wink - so we remain SSDS again.

The "vacuum cleaners" surrounding Aust atm have put paid to moisture ingress to Vic so despite the perfect set-up in a mild La Nina season it looks like we'll get the equivelent of a normal cool change through Vic for this one.

Seasonally, it adds to the chances of a WET outcome during one of the next few events (still yet to be identified by this black duck).

For Monday...

We had distant rumbles to NNW today so things build tomorrow and Sun so more chance of one peeling off the foothills coming up.

Sorry, I was posting for here specifically but if the moisture inflow from out NW and NE remained inshore, this would have been a flooding event.

Anyhow, like I said, this system now will deliver rain totals akin to a standard cool change for this time of year. Its only my humble opinion ... (circa 10- 25mm) totalled from now to Tue).

I hope I'm wrong.

Think you're right Petros, with all the moisture this could've potentitally been so much more damaging, I don't expect more then 10mm for Melbourne unless they get a severe one.

Just took a peak at the Stormcast and Storm Potential charts (still yet to figure out how to use, read, and thus understand all the other forecast charts on the Brisbane Storm Chasers website poke ) looking like Central Victoria, including the Melbourne area, could be lashed be potentially violent thunerstorms over the next 48 hours, that would be a fantastic Christmas gift... but nowhere near as special as being with my gorgeous girlfriend from Fiji smile

This is certainly shaping up to be my best storm season ever, I'm losing track of all the thunderstorm days I've recorded this season since July 4 (including the number of days on which storms have not passed over my area but were visible from a distance, such as today). Fingers crossed for the next 2 days... and for the rest of the 2011-2012 Storm Season cheers

Merry Christmas everybody!

Should be some nice looking stoms around the ranges today. Going to continue warm and damp as well. Interesting UKmet has a precip max west of Melbourne today, most other models have any highlighted max toward the east. GFS for 5 days has had its max over Melbourne, moved it to the Dandenongs over the last run or two.

19/17 at home with a murky sky, looks about to burn off though.

Christmas day still looks interesting over central and eastern parts.
