We've had on and off thunder here at Belmont since the storms south of Lake Macquarie that extended out in the ocean at around 5 AM. Haven't had much in the way of rain (not enough to record) but the storm at 5 AM was very lightning active and has begun to back-build out at west Lake Macquarie. I'm surprised no STW has been issued for flash flooding due to the very slow (basically stationary) movement of the storms. Funny you should mention 'no STW' for the Lake Macquarie region Funnel Cloud, I was amazed no STW was issued when the front swept through Merimbula on Wednesday. The squall line was quite intense, particularly the winds and rain, as was the rain in some of the preceding cells. They had warned of a 4m swell offshore as the front moved through.

However, people who spend more than the occasional holiday in the snowies will know that snowfalls up there in summer are common. Just for the record, I've been holidaying in the Snowy Mountains in summer for 25 years, and own two houses there, so I think I have a grip on what goes on down there at this time of year. Homer

I tried to edit my above post but the time ran out. This is the edited version. However, people who spend more than the occasional holiday in the snowies will know that snowfalls up there in summer are common. Just for the record, I've been going to the Snowy mountains since the early 70's for holidays. Thats 40 years. I've been holidaying there in summer for 25 years, and own two houses there now, and also am planning on retiring there, so I think I have a grip on what goes on down there at this time of year. Hence why I am extremely interested in other people's experiences. If they choose not to share them, that's fine. Homer

I see Montague island dropped to 9.7C at 1443 today. Wonder if that is a new January record min? (Weatherzone site says the previous Jan min was 10.0C on 25 Jan 1997. Blair?
With wind-chills falling to 4.5C it must be pretty icy for anyone doing any boat trips out there today. The penguins would be at home though!! I note that the BOM hasn't yet updated the minimum for Montegue Island for Jan 12 http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/IDCJDW2083.latest.shtml . I remember seeing the temperature record for last Wednesday showing the temperature drop from about 14 at 1400 to 9.7 at 1443 then back up to about 13 (from memory) by 1500. That would be quite remarkable. Maybe the equipment malfunctioned.

Steve777, those obs look perfectly feasible to me given the events of that afternoon. Canberra had a weird low of 9.3 in the late afternoon also. There was indeed a very sudden temp drop in many places that afternoon.
