Yeppoon: Cloudy, rain periods. confused

I think we are all asking when the rain is going to start. When Cairns has only had 12mm for Jan so far you know the wet hasn't arrived yet.

Vinnie, get your rain boots on, and, possibly, a dinghy at the ready. You're in for very heavy rain over the next few days. I wouldn't be surprised to see a severe weather warning for flash flooding by the end of today. At any rate, your forecast should be upgraded by this afternoon.

I seriously doubt that there is any real rain in this event for us at all. In dry years like this one we are having, you could quite honestly take any forecast rainfall amount you see and add a Point (.), if you see 40mm forecast, they really mean 4.0mm, if you see 127mm they really mean 12.7mm.

As you can tell I really hate the weather in this part of the country. It's hit and miss, more miss than hit.

Lol, fair call Sandfly. I guess then using your theory that with the 300mm that GFS has progged for Rocky you should get 30mm out of it. 30mm should not be sneezed at. wink

widespread rain areas forming north and west of rocky on the emerald radar. should continue over the next few days as an upper trough continues to hover about.

We all get frustrated with the weather, esp when some are getting it and others aren't, or your progged for lots of rain and then it doesn't eventuate. It's hard for me to say, but just have to stay postivie Vinnie. It has been an unusual start to the wet season, especially after last year, everyone's thinking it's a la nina and expecting the rain. Hopefully we will see some more of the wet stuff over the coming days. I did see the radar last night and it seemed there was a band of us that missed out, straight through to Rocky/Yeppoon. Anyone let's hope you see some action today. smile

BOM and Weatherzone sticking to 20-40mm and I can't see anything substantial on the radar. Where is this rain supposed to be coming from ? Further north ?

17mm has fallen since yesterday (though feels like less as it has been light)

I notice Rocky has only had 1 mm .

Quite a bit of variation in what to expect tomorrow in Yeppoon

GFS 134.3 mm (which if it was correct would be just over the average for the month in 1 day - laugh !)
PME 43mm
OCF 23mm
EC 42mm

And for Rocky

GFS 85mm
PME 19mm
OCF 16mm
EC 20mm.

Emerald
GFS 16.3mm
PME 9.4mm
OCF 2mm
EC 0.5mm

Sorry about the triple post, but going back to post #1056359

Here is the state forecast which after reading makes me think tomorrow may be the day we see the heavier rain rather than this light stuff.

Quote:
Forecast for Monday

The upper trough is expected to remain slow moving over the interior of Queensland.
Quote:
This upper feature is expected to combine with a surface trough to produce rain areas and thunderstorms in a band from the northern tropics to the Capricornia with moderate falls, possibly locally heavy near the coast
. Cloudy conditions will also continue over the southeast with patchy rain, showers and possible local thunder. Fine about the Channel Country. The upper trough will maintain unstable conditions over remaining areas of the interior with showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. Maximum temperatures will remain below the January average over much of southern and central Queensland.

Quote:
Severe storms and heavy rain drench parts of QLD
Willemien Phelan, Sunday January 15, 2012 - 16:49 EDT

Scattered falls of 50-150 mm have soaked inland to coastal parts of QLD over the past 24 hours, from the Darling Downs through to the Lower Burdekin.

A deepening inland low pressure trough over eastern Australia was one of three factors contributing to the recent storms and heavy rain over several Queensland districts. The second has been the persistent easterly winds blowing off the ocean, providing a continuous supply of available moisture. And the third main factor is a pool of cold air in the upper levels of the atmosphere, that has added enhanced instability to the mix.

The upper cold pool acted to enhance storm activity particularly over the Darling Downs. Some of the heaviest falls in the state were along the border with NSW. Bengalla had 144mm in the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday, whilst Giddi Giddi to the west of Goondiwindi had a torrential 178mm, the heaviest in a year. Further north, Whites Creek to the south of Townsville had a daily total of 102mm.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued on Sunday afternoon for parts of Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Maranoa and Warrego and Darling Downs and Granite Belt Districts. The warning is for damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones.

With a Tasman high pressure system remaining fairly stationary and a coastal trough lingering, this wet weather set-up is expected to continue for the next couple of days. Although the cold pool is expected to dissipate, there is still copious amounts of moisture available. Scattered rainfall totals of between 150 and 200mm or more is a possibility over the next four days, particularly over coastal parts of the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett and Central Coast districts.

Yesterday, we received 12.9mm of rain, and today we got 3.6mm. Middlemount will be nice and green with this rainfall and the sound of lawn mowers will become a frequent sound. The lower temperature, was a nice change. I was able to turn off the air conditioning, and open all the windows to get some fresh air into the house. If we receive any more rain in the next couple of days, it will only be an added bonus.
