pretty sure. land spout forms from the ground up to the sky. and a tornado forms from the sky to the ground connected to a mesocyclone
but hey i only saw the video and my opinion should really be taken with a grain of salt until further pictures or video becomes available. i just write what i think when i see it its a bad trait of mine

Ok I just checked the glossary [Slang] A tornado that does not arise from organized storm-scale rotation and therefore is not associated with a wall cloud (visually) or a mesocyclone (on radar). Landspouts typically are observed beneath Cb's or towering cumulus clouds (often as no more than a dust whirl), and essentially are the land-based equivalents of waterspouts. I think you're correct EFujita, the radar didnt look like anything spectacular really or anything that could create a tornado. From what I saw in the video (hard to see) but there wasn't really any major wall clouds either.

BOM did issue warnings to pakenham. im not sure of certain aspects to tornadoes/land spouts. could it be a cold air tornado ? still thinking land spout the characteristics i could see remind me of land spout moama tornado is a prime example. there was nothing crazy looking about it and it was after a storm when it happened. with almost clear skies

I think a landspout isn't associated with storm rotation and is like a water spout...but on land, and its not associated with a mesocyclone either if thats the correct term, correct me if im wrong. I'd say you're spot on here. The rotation of a land spout is probably started on the ground from air rushing in at different angles, combined with rising heat, whereas with a tornado the spin is created within the clouds, which then reaches down to the ground. You could probably call land spouts and dust devils the same thing, maybe just land spouts being associated with storms?

Just nicked out to drop off one of my kids at a friends house and observed a massive length of 'black' cloud heading our way (coming up from the south). Looked again like my favourite word atm - (a) mothership. There seems to be some rain in it according to the radar - but visually it looks like something from "...Day After Tomorrow" It'll probably just drop a few sprinkles and looks meaner than what it probably is

Hi guys, you might want to have a look at the video below, ignoring the STUPID title, the 'tornado' that he has filmed seems to have similar characteristics (color, size, shape etc..) to this 'pakenham Tornado', having no clouds above being the only obvious difference. It may or may not be the same phenomenon but nonetheless an interesting video to watch. BTW has anyone confirmed what it is, any pictures/other footage found? http://youtu.be/VE_UFJWQcZkCheers TB.
