What a start to the month!
At Tamworth AWS it has rained in 20 hours of the first 24. Sort of like Milford Sound.

Manilla rain for the first 2 days of February is 113.4 mm. That is less than Tamworth (161) but more than Gunnedah (79).
Still, this is nearly twice the February mean total. At this rate, we'll have a year's rain in 12 days. poke

Like Milford Sound, Surly?

Sunny and warm?
I kid, I kid. grin (have reminded me to upload a couple of my NZ pics from January actually) How I managed to score a sunny and warm day in a place that averages 6500-7000mm annually and during its wettest month on average is beyond me, lol!

It was dreary and wet here yesterday as well Surly. A good start to February though, with 95.4mm falling here yesterday. Wettest day here since the floods in late November.

Extreme 6-monthly rain total.

Counting 130.8 mm of rain so far this month, Manilla's 6-month total rainfall is approaching a historic record. It is already 702 mm. The highest ever was 785 mm in February 1971. Next highest were in March, April and June of 1890. The February 2012 6-month total is running 7th.
Only 3 days in February have been counted. Another 84 mm would break the record. Even another 27 mm would make 4th place.

Highest ever 6-month totals:
Feb 1971: 785 mm
Mar 1890: 781 mm
Jun 1890: 742 mm
Apr 1890: 728 mm
Mar 1956: 720 mm
Feb 1955: 715 mm
Feb 2012: (702 mm)

The Manilla 6-month total rainfall, now at 725 mm, is the fifth wettest on record, beating those in 1955 and 1956.

Near record rainfall

Since the 3rd of February, a further 33.2 mm of rain has brought the 6-month total nearer to breaking the record set in February 1971.

Highest ever 6-monthly totals:
1. Feb 1971: 785 mm
2. Mar 1890: 781 mm
3. Jun 1890: 742 mm
4. Feb 2012: 735 mm (so far)
5. Apr 1890: 728 mm
6. Mar 1956: 720 mm
7. Feb 1955: 715 mm

Another 51 mm would break that record for 6-monthly rain total. It would also break the 5-monthly record.
There is no chance of breaking the 3-monthly record, or the records for summer or for February.

With the February total up to 192.2 mm (4th wettest February on record) the 6-monthly total is now 763.4 mm.
As you see, this is now the 3rd wettest 6-monthly period.
Another 18 mm in the next eight days would make it 2nd wettest, while 22 mm would break the 1971 record.

Gambling is very popular in Manilla, but I haven't heard if anyone is offering odds.

I erred in the above post.
With the February final total at 193.6 mm, it is the fifth wettest February in the record beginning 1883.

The total for September 2011 to February 2012, 764.8 mm, is the third wettest 6-monthly period, exceeded only in February 1971 and March 1890.

The total for October 2011 to February 2012, 674 mm, is the fourth wettest 5-monthly period, exceeded only in February 1971, February 1955, and March 1890.

The total for November 2011 to February 2012, 576 mm, is the third wettest 4-monthly period, exceeded only in February 1971 and February 1976.

After an average sort of summer for rain right right until the day before yesterday, the 29th leap year day and last day of the summer brought about 1/4 of the whole summers rain and my wettest day this decade with 92.8mm and pushed summer rain well above normal. February thus came in at 225.5mm. Another month with below normal temps, however the negative anomaly for February was the smallest of the summer, this the warmest and wettest month of summer.

Jan 121.4mm over 15 days which was just 2 mm short of the average

and December 2011 138mm which was a few mm above average.

November 2011 was about 7 mm which is WAY below average.

February very wet at Manilla

The daily weather log
As in December and January, nearly all the days and nights of January were cooler than normal. No days went over 35°, and no nights over 20°. Wednesday the 1st reached only 18.5°, which is 15.3° below normal. Rain that began three days earlier, totalled 145.2 mm by the 4th : one-fifth of a year’s rain in seven days! However, there was no flooding.
In all, February had 11 rain days, totalling 193.6 mm, with 73.2 mm on the 2nd.

Comparing Februaries
While this month’s mean daily maximum temperature was nearly 3° below normal, February 2008 was cooler on all measures.
The Dew Point was again low: very dry air persists, despite cloudy skies and extreme rainfall.
The rainfall of 193.6 mm is in the 97th percentile for February, the fifth wettest in 129 years. As this combines with the November deluge, rain totals for groups of 4, 5, and 6 months have near-record values: 4 months: 576 mm (3rd wettest); 5 months: 674 mm (4th wettest); 6 months: 765 mm (3rd wettest). Total rainfalls for longer periods, up to 30 years, are now all well above average.

Manilla's summer cold and wet

In the whole of this summer, only 3 days went over 35° (usually 23) and only 5 nights went over 20° (usually 19).
The smoothed curves of temperature reached up as high as normal only twice. In early January both days and nights were normal. Later, with persistent rain around the 1st of February, nights warmed to normal, but days were extremely cold.
All the mean daily temperatures were the lowest in 13 summers: maximum 28.9°, mean 22.2°, and minimum 15.4°. Summer ’07-’08 had been just slightly warmer.
Daily temperature range this summer (13.5°) was very narrow, as in ’07-’08 and ’10-’11; all wet summers with very cloudy skies. Strangely, this cloudy wet summer had very low humidity, with morning Dew Point (12.7°) the lowest on this record.
While this was a very wet summer, at 333 mm, it was only the 19th wettest (86th percentile), and not much wetter than summers 4, 6, and 8 years ago.
