If your only after wind speed, consider looking into the inpeed vortex and you can get data logging software for it also to log to laptop.. however only does wind speed. - and not wireless.

Updates every 1 second, and very accurate - handle winds to over 125mph+

Very well priced too.

http://www.inspeed.com/anemometers/default.asp

I purchased one of these as a portable anemometer, tested the accuracy against cairns met office obs and was very impressed at how accurate it was. My readings were slightly lower due to the fact I was not 10m above the ground and in an open field.

On the other side if your after more data and wireless look into the davis vantage weather stations they are accurate, you will pay the extra but they do alot more than just logging wind data.

Hope this helps.

I think that the propeller style wind gauges are the superior, the BOM use them a lot, but I have no idea where to get one. The thing is with a propeller that you do not have an opposing cup pushing back against the wind as with any cup wind gauge. A propeller would have a smoother, larger and more linear measuring range than cups.

hey I've just got hold of an old school Springfield weather station. It is set in whatever it was before metric. I'm quite the ignoramus when it comes to technical 'stuff' so thought I'd post here for some help. I converted the temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius and the thermometer appears correct. However I'm not sure how to set the barometer (yes I've googled) without knowing what unit it is measuring in right now. The gauge numbers are from 28 - 31.....( with smaller numbers from 1-9 in between. Is this a mercury reading, inches per whatever? Any ideas people? I need to know so I can covert to Hectopascals and set accordingly.

I think it is Inches of Mercury (inHg)

Definitely inches of mercury; the numbers 1 to 9 will thus be 28.1,28.2...28.9 inches and so on.

To convert inches of mercury to millibars (hectopascals; they are the same) multiply inches of mercury by 33.86386.

Thus 30 inches =1016 millibars.

Mercury it is.I love my new/old set up.
Now I've got to find an accurate barometer reading for my area. Hunting on weatherzone now, hints?

Barometer readings are pretty easy to find but and it is a big but, they may not be accurate for your area as they come from BoM which may be a long way away as the crow flies.

But here you go have a look at this http://www.willyweather.com.au/qld/gold-coast/currumbin-beach.html At least it is a starting point.

Hi Ms Milo.

I would just use the Coolangatta reading. I think you will find this is taken at the airport which is fairly close to your location. This reading is also updated regularly.

Link: http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ60901/IDQ60901.94592.shtml

If you were able you could actually check the web site obtain the reading and then drive with the barometer to the airport and set it there. I don't think you could get more accurate than that.

Regards

Greg
