great stuff.... very inspiring pictures. I'll be doing plenty of snow visits for photography purposes this year.... really keeps me busy in the off-storm season. I hope to get some good rock formations combined with snow - so the first place i'm thinking of is the rocky outcrop just near Seaman's Hut.

Lets hope its a good snow season, we are due. With the climate being warmer these days, it gets harder for those strong seasons to eventuate.

Came across this site quite by accident. I don't know if the owner is a visitor to this forum or not, or even if perhaps his site has been referred to in the past. Anyway, I hope someone is interested with this fellow snow lover's photos and reporting; I certainly enjoyed his offerings. http://gungahlinweather.com/photos/photography.htmPeter.

Blair, the lodge is some 30-35m above the valley floor so the height is noticeable. I can understand the the -18 at Perisher with that height difference and position at the foot of the slope. However Charlotte Pass is almost the same elevation, about 1750 in the valley where the WS is, to go another 5deg less than Perisher is asking a lot. That is why I think the WS must have been sunk 1m in that snow pack thus measuring only 50cm above ground. Interesting about the mean min relative to extreme min, good reasoning I agree. SB I agree with Blair on the pine trees, they do live in much colder conditions, certainly would be zero effect from the tar or buildings. I agree the main problem for vegetation are the cold summer temps not the winter ones. Having no reliable summer warm period severely limits plant/tree germination. If the pine tree is P. radiata it is supposed to be hardy only to USDA Zone 8, so temps musn't get below -12c where it is situated

Just saw a segment on ABC News 24 "weather quarter" where they showed live TV footage from that 1965 snow event. They showed good shots of Lithgow and parts of the BM's, what a sight, Lithgow looked amazing. Sounded like that same voice as from that radio broadcast most of us have heard. They said snow fell as far north as Mackay in Queensland and a very large chunk of NSW had snow on the ground. Does anyone know how to get a copy of the news story?. I only managed to record a little bit before it was over, could take a screen shot from the TV.

Just so you know the snow segment is not until the last 5min of this 15min episode. That got me the first time, as I was not expecting it. It was repeated last night, so I would say it will be at those other times mentioned. Well worth seeing, have it recorded now.

Wow, that was so good to see some pics from that '65 event, How long will we have to wait to see snow like that again?
Great images of Mount Victoria and that streetscape from Lithgow with the two storey terrace is Bent Street.

Probably never in our life times avalon. It is possible though but yeah, very unlikely to see something to that exent these days.
Lovely footage.
Its very sobering to see all of that tropical moisture coming down to NSW today and no prospect of strong frontal weather for perhaps weeks or more.
Fingers crossed winter does something cold and white for us eventually...or soon!

Got an email from somone trying to track down this location, anyone got any ideas? What a lovely fall across the Blue Mountains this was. You can read a bit more about the photo owners thoughts from the link. Bit hard to tell from the photo, exactly where it was taken: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bdayling/7159574525/To me it looks a bit like River Lett Hill. I think it may have been the same fanstastic fall that my wife experienced whilst on holidays as a little kid.

Road too wide to be a back road so it's most likely the highway and I suspect like Blizz the around the top of the River Lett Hill or even a tad towards the Hassans Walls section of road (near the picnic area/lookout of today) is the most likely area and on the old road. That's my strong impression of the view.
I'd say you're right. It says the photo was taken near "South Bowenfels", so probably on the old 40 bends looking south towards Hampton.

You are right SB, I asked a few people and they seem to agree. That is just amazing that there was another snowfall almost like 1965 in 1970 as well. This is just so depressing that these sort of snows were maybe only a once in 5 years event. The sort of snow we get now just once a winter was just a weekly event in every winter back then. Thinking about this more makes AGW look far far worse than I ever imagined.

Maybe Jenolan Rd between Good Forest and Hampton? It is one HELL of a snowfall. To see snow down in the deep valley like that.
That Weather Quarter video that shows the cows standing in snow is in Hartley, looking back to Hassans Walls. Imagine snow down in Hartley now? Not likely.
PD there was a really good fall about 1972, in the August school hols, I was with the grandparents and we had to clear the roof twice, it was dangerous. Snow on the ground for two or three days.

Avalon, where was the snowfall in 1972 where you had to clear the snow?.
Just amazing yet another one, that brings back memories for me of the huge snowfalls in the Barringtons in the 70's. There were weeks back then when they were cut off by drifts. No matter when you went up in winter there was always as much snow as Thredbo or Lake Mountain. It was never a question is there snow there on all days from mid June to Mid August, but how much. Just like now when you go to the Snowies, you generally expect some snow at all times in winter.

There were a number of good falls in the 70s and plenty of good falls in decades preceeding that. The changes in the last thirty years have been quite dramatic actually. My wife's family also experieced that fall above, I think. Then again, there were quite a few good falls in the 70s so its hard to remember exactly which one my wife experienced up here in her holidays.
10 to 15cm falls were not rare in the Blue Mountains above 900M and 30cm and much more was not uncommon up high on the OP.
