STRONG WIND WARNINGS HAVE BEEN LIFTED FOR: COASTAL PARTS OF SOUTHLAND INCLUDING STEWART ISLAND, EASTERN OTAGO ESPECIALLY ABOUT AND SOUTH OF THE OTAGO PENINSULA, BANKS PENINSULA, ALSO EXPOSED AREAS OF AUCKLAND AND COROMANDEL PENINSULA. P.S. Don't you think it's about time you changed that ridiculous excuse for an address-line? Not only is it factually incorrect (as I've said before, Auckland normally only records about 3 days per year where winds reach gale force), but readers might then have an idea where 'here' is.

What is the climate around Napier/Hastings like throughout the year? You never hear too much about them (apart from Napier's architecture). Also are there any links to NZ Climatic Averages/Statistics? Thanks NZAAS, did Auckland have gales again today?

Also are there any links to NZ Climatic Averages/Statistics? Thanks NZAAS, did Auckland have gales again today? Their stats are pretty good by NZ standards. Average daily Tmax. values for Napier (Jan, July, year) are about 24.4, 14.1 and 19.3 (nowhere in NZ exceeds the first or third figures by more than about 1C). Humidities are generally lower than at the damper west coast locations, and Napier's 30-year mean rainfall of about 805mm is as low as anywhere in the North Island. Average annual sunshine for all years at Napier is about 2245 hours. Bay of Plenty at Tauranga and Whakatane get a bit more, and Nelson and Blenheim in the "Mainland" get over 2400 hrs. These numbers are of course low compared to most of Australia. If you like a bit of warmth without excessive heat and a moderate rainfall, Napier is a pretty good choice. The area sometimes gets a run of dull days in persistent easterly conditions.

I think Napier also holds the North Island record for the most amount of annual sunshine hours set in 1994 with 2588 hrs and, like Christchurch in the Canterbury Plains, Napier in the Hawke's Bay region gets the fohn effect from NW'ers. MetService have a slightly outdated summary of NZ 30 year averages from 1969-1998 here . Btw, contrary to what NZAAS might have you believe, on Wednesday (18th) the T-max for Wellington was only 12°C and in Christchurch it was only 13°C. Also, although Auckland's most frequent winds are from WSW, a relatively large proportion of the strongest winds come from the NE.

You can get a small sample of "free" averages for 1971-2000 from NIWA's website. Any more detail than that costs money.
Some people get their pleasure from moaning - it's up to moderators, if they want to do anything about it.

Hi RWood. Presumably you mean this NIWA - Overview of NZ Climate link which includes Mean Annual Temps, Rainfall and Sunshine Hours in graphic form, plus a downloadable files link to NZ various averages.

Rainfall does seem to be quite extreme for Auckland this year going from very dry to wet then back to very dry - Feb had 9mm, March recorded 178mm and so far this month - only 18mm has fallen.
69 hours of sun for Invercargill to date for April.

Sounds reasonable with the SWers - also remember my note about the EWS (though the differences are more significant in summer). We have 131.5 hrs in the first 20 days, so well above average.

Looks like a dry April for most of NZ, sunnier as well over the NI. Temps quite warm - Auckland recorded 24oC on Thursday and 22oC today ?? -judging by comments on the other forum. Not much extreme events as well ?

Rain and cloud over a large area today, and pretty cloudy for many from the 25th. At this stage the rain deficits and sunshine surplus both look to be quite a bit less than they promised to be after 3 weeks.

Around half the average April recorded for Invercargill (45mm) and sunshine hours at 81 so far.

Wellington stuck on 167 as of yesterday but sunny now and may crank out another 6-10 today & tomorrow. Rainfall 78 mm, boosted by 24mm in the last 2 days. Before then the 2 main falls of 38mm and about 10mm were at night, so until yesterday the month had seemed quite dry.

Some phenomenal rainfalls there in Sydney Rainfan Yes, it's been a relatively dry, sunny and warm April for Auckland. Up to 20mm fell around the region on Fri/Sat night, with up to a further 7mm on Sat//Sun night and more expected tomorrow. The only other major rainfall event was around the 12-13th. NIWA's Owairaka site (a quarried volcanic cone in the central Auckland suburb of Mt Albert) will probably show about 60-70mm by the end of April (9am tomorrow), which is still only about 2/3's of normal. Most T-maxs for the month were in the early 20's (C), so Auckland's days should be slightly warmer than normal, balanced out by slightly cooler nights. Spare a thought for Hamilton with less than 20% of normal rainfall so far

Fantastic shot there Willoughby and congratulations to Simon for making the front page of the NZ Herald with this accompanying story... Fire in the sky 5:00AM Wednesday May 02, 2007 By Keith Perry Lightning illuminates Rangitoto and the Hauraki Gulf during an isolated thunderstorm last night. Photo / Simon Williams (see photo above) Stargazers had a spectacular view of Mother Nature's fury when a lightning storm lit up Rangitoto skies last night. Artist and weather watcher Simon Williams took the photo from his Mt Eden vantage point and captured the moment when the storm hit the Hauraki Gulf, around 6.30pm. It lasted about 30 minutes. To get the image he had to keep the shutter open for between five and 10 seconds and use a tripod. "What was unusual about this storm was that it happened on a fine day and we were able to observe the lightning within the clouds," Mr Williams said. "And with the full moon there was a bit of extra light around." Bob McDavitt of the MetService said the display was caused by a moist northerly flow ahead of a front. He thought the electrical storm could have been 60 to 100km north of Auckland. Copyright ©2007, APN Holdings NZ Limited Yes, according to NIWA's April Summary, most of New Zealand had a dry, sunny but cooler than usual April. Below are some stats of the 5 main centres... Auckland T-Mean: 16.1°C (-0.2°C of norm) Rainfall: 66mm (62% of norm) Sunshine: 187hrs (119% of norm) HamiltonT-Mean: 14.0°C (-0.5°C of norm) Rainfall: 59mm (63% of norm) Sunshine: 160hrs (98% of norm) Wellington T-Mean: 13.1°C (-0.7°C of norm) Rainfall: 92mm (92% of norm) Sunshine: 174hrs (112% of norm) ChristchurchT-Mean: 11.4°C (-0.7°C of norm) Rainfall: 56mm (109% of norm) Sunshine: 166hrs (103% of norm) DunedinT-Mean: 11.1°C (-0.8°C of norm) Rainfall: 36mm (62% of norm) Sunshine: 106hrs (87% of norm)
