Looking at Access and to a lesser extent GFS/EC, there is quite decent potential for snow to at least the peaks late over Easter. Depending on which model you look at (Access very bullish) we range from the 540 line over Tas/Vic and even the Snowies in NSW at some point to missing or just brushing Tas.

From the look of the setup - I reckon it's a reasonable chance for snow say to 800 to 1000 metres in the Central and Southern areas. At worst I suspect only the higher peaks but I think it will quite possibly be better than that.

Usual suspects should get some, South Western areas, Mt Wellington, Mt Field, Central areas, Liawenee area and to a lesser extent (moisture) Ben Lomond. Cradle may see snow down towards the accomodation areas as well.

Anyhow that's my take on it. Snowies may have something to say about it smile

Models at odds with each other - wait to see where they go - I still believe it very likely there will be snow on at least the peaks and quite possibly Highland areas as well.

DaveM, must admit it does look quite cold and snowy for much of Tassie on Monday. In fact below zero 850's from Sunday night to Tuesday. Late Monday will be the peak of the cold as the heavier showers ease, but still some snow falling with 850's around -3. Certainly plenty of snow above 1000m in many areas likely now.
We will see the effects of the colder air here mainly on Tuesday.

Snow down to 600m in the west, could see it on the tiers driving home, saw photo's online of settled snow in Waratah - couple of cm's at least.

Looks like snow to fall in the higher parts of Tassie this Saturday. 540 line is covering most of the state according to all three models. Strong winds as well so it will be a bit nasty in the higher areas. Quick look just using 540 usually means snow to about 900 or 1000m. Western & SW areas will do the best, drying out in the NE of the state.

Tourists on top of Mt Wellington Saturday will cop a hiding. All part of the Tassie experience. In this type of event I always tried to get up to Mt Field and Lake Dobson/Wombat Moor. smile

Official warning (Bushwalkers) gives official snow level as 800m - that's usually the settling elevation they put there. I wouldn't be surprised if it settled to maybe 600 or 700 with snow falling to 500 or so.

Hey DaveM and Tassie crew. Good to follow the reports from Tassie even if reported from afar. If things work out we will be making the move down to Tassie every year from Mid Nov to Easter and then back up to Broome for the winter. Will miss the tropics and the wet season(???not really to hot) and will be reporting from Tassie instead. Looking forward to it already.

Hey Popeye good to hear from you. You going to be east coasting or highlanding in Tas?

It will be good to have an active contribution from on site. My old weather nut group are pretty quiet down there unless something spectacular is going on. Also a lot of our old group have moved elsewhere in Tas and/or interstate and not many newbies have come along since. It was a golden age of weather nuttery. smile

Definitely will be snow in most higher areas today (more precip south & west).

Honestly once you get used to the freezing cold water smile and NOT being in the 30's every day, you will love it down there I'm sure. Either location is magic. I know Broome is special but Boy oh boy so is Freycinet.

Couple of models going for a cutoff cold pool over Tas Tue/Wed too - only smallish but that should create a bit more flakeage. It cann snow there even without the 540 over the state - have experienced that on a number of occasions in Mt Field area.

Going for the highlands Dave. From one extreme to the other. Really looking forward to the challenge and the seasonal move. Have been given the initial approval by Parks and just waiting on the final outcome this week. Fingers crossed but its looking good. Would love to see a few summer snowfalls. That would be great.

Well the highlands in the NW can be quite wet so it may not feel quite so foreign although the rain will feel much colder down there smile

November & April would be the best bets for snow to be seen for there in your time frame. However it IS possible at any time. There's nearly always a solid cold front in December and amazing how often it can be right around Christmas. I saw snow on Christmas Eve/Day 3 years out my 10 down there on Mt Wellington.

I look forward to hearing more about it from you. cheers
