We usually follow the rule of my birthday (14th April) as to when it starts to get colder and the fire gets lit in our place in Tas!

At each ANZAC Day dawn service in Dubbo, local Army Reservists stand guard beneath the local memorial cenotaph. They wear the standard summer dress uniform of short-sleeve shirts, and I'm sure they freeze; the still autumn early morning air is very cold. Its usually the moment that I sigh with relief after the long summers here, because it stays cool from then until September.

It has been beautiful waking up the last two mornings to the sound of good heavy showers. Although I don't have a rain gauge, I'd say out totals would be close to 60mm for Sunday-Monday

The Orange Show is usually around the end if April. 28th and 29th this year. You can be sure that it will turn very cold just before Anzac Day and the show dates.

Annual shows are also known to be the reliable harbingers of rainfall events. I used to live nearer Orange and it was the same; you might say to someone, "Only two weeks 'til the Show's on", and they'd inevitably reply, "Oh well, s'pose we'll get some rain then".

Wentworth Falls are going ballistic! I went for a quick walk down to Princes Rock (way to wet to get the camera out) and in between billowing mist the entire rock face was awash in this tannin stained tumultuous torrent.

I took some photos of weeping rock on my phone (it was a little more sheltered, but still too heavy for the DSLR) so I'll see if I can upload them to the PC and get them on the web.

Yes, its beautiful rain for sure. The waterfalls around here tomorrow will be going nuts.

Just as an aside, I am reading an excellent book at the moment that might interest some folk here. Its called The Last Explorer and is a story on the aussie explorer Hubert Wilkins from the early twentieth century. He was originally a sheep farmer in SA and his great loves were photography (WW1 war cameraman etc), ice/snow, meterology and aviation. Some of his early aviation stories are just incredible. Its a gripping read for sure and well worth the twenty odd bucks.

All this talk of mist, cascading waterfalls, heavy rainfall! It rained here this afternoon at about 3PM...for about 5 minutes. Every afternoon in the last 5-7 days cumulus has been forming into impressive anvils...and then drifting about 20 kms to the east, south and or north of the immediate Dubbo area before dumping, leaving not a cloud in the western sky.

That title sounds like a serious contender for Next On My Book List, Blizz. I'm reading The Weather Makers (along with the rest of Australia, it seems) at the moment.

Yeah, read the Weather Makers after a relly gave it to me. I recognise Tim F's sincerity but his climatology knowledge seems short of a good number of folk on these forums but I may need to read it again. Certainly a popular book though.

Popped down to G.Leap waterfall yesterday but the flow wasn't as good as I had expected as we had less rain than say, Katoomba during this event.

We had 216mm here in Wentworth Falls from Sunday morning to Tuesday morning - waterfalls pumping in Wenty yesterday - tried to look at Wentworth Falls late Monday afternoon - they sounded amazing but too misty to get a good view

I must have just missed you Andrew, we went down as well, but as you said the mist was quite thick. But for a minute or two it did clear and it was an amazing site! It was the most water I have ever seen falling at any of the mountain's falls in my life.

I went back with the camera yesterday afternoon and got a few photos of the falls. Although it had dropped a lot, it was amazing the difference in flow between yesterday and a photo I took of the falls at the end of October! When I get to PP'ing them tomorrow I'll post them.

It was also good to see that the Nepean had about 500mm rise to it yesterday. Should help to clear out a little bit of the weed.

The photos of Lake Superior from the Minnesota link were incredible. I knew the Great Lakes were large, but those wave trains were something I never could've imagined.

Does anyone have any information about a widespread snowfall event that occurred in eastern Australia around 1900? I've seen the fantastic photo of Mudgee under snow in 1902 in this thread, and I've heard there was up to a foot of snow in unlikely places like Ivanhoe in western NSW. I'm not sure if they are the same event or not. Are there any other print or online references to this?

That's just what I was after Andrew, thanks very much for that. I'd heard little snippets here and there, but never found much online until now.

It would be amazing to see something like that in Australia again, however unlikely. Like snowfall in the lower US states, it would cause major disruption.

I used to live at Molong (529m ASL), and the idea of over 1-ft of snow there is incredible. The last time snow briefly settled there was in the early 1980s.
