Hey, the massive cold snap over East Europe is striking Germany very hard, too. Since the beginning of the icy conditions there were 2 deaths here in Germany. Especially the eastern parts of Germany were hit by the massive arctic outbreak. They get low's from -15 to -25°C and high's around -10°C. The western parts have a bit moderate conditions with low's around -10 to -15°C and high temperatures that rises up to -5°C. We didn't have big problems with snow, because there is only a small strip in east Germany with snow depth between 2 to 10 cm, and a small strip at the french border with depths only around 2 to 4 cm. But now it's getting dangerous for shipping due to the fact that the first rivers are freezing. Low temperatures this morning Right now (9:33 pm) we have a cloudy sky by -8.1°C. Here are my high's and low's at my station: Jan 29: +1.3 / -1.9 Jan 30: +1.8 / -2.1 Jan 31: -0.6 / -6.5 Feb 01: -2.7 / -8.9 Feb 02: -3.9 / -11.1 Feb 03: -3.6 / -13.8

Good to hear from you again Skyline, Ive wondered quite a few times how you were getting on in Germany with this freezing weather. Is life continuing fairly much as normal for most people or are schools and businesses closed? Is transport disrupted? Thanks for bringing us up to date.

Passed through Frankfurt Airport this morning en route to Geneva. No snow on the ground which surprised me a little.

@ Cloudz: No, life is continuing very normal. There are hardly problems in transportation. But a lot of cars (especially diesel cars) have big problems in this cold weather. Still very cold over here in Germany. Temperature climbed from -14.2°C this morning to -3.0°C right now. But now it looks like we will get warmer weather with temperatures are reaching +5°C in the North-West of Germany. Our forecast: Tomorrow snow -1°C Tuesday snow, sleet, freezing rain, rain +2°C Wednesday snow, sleet, rain +3°C This weather will produce more problems in transportation than the fridgy, clear and dry conditions we had over the last 2 weeks.

Good to hear Skyline, and good luck as the weather warms a bit. Have you seen the pics on the Italian thread, the snow there is beyond belief!! We're having a very non-eventful summer here but many of us are hoping we will get a below average winter here as well, altho' nothing like yours! Please keep us up to date

Haven't heard of any significant records at long-term stations (in Germany or anywhere else in central Europe): most places would have been much colder in 1942 and 1956, and most on other occasions too. As for monthly temperatures, February 1956 was essentially as cold as the first 10 days of February 2012, but averaged across the whole month.
Oberstdorf (at an elevation of 800-odd metres near the Austrian border) is a well-known frost hollow and -28.5 is not especially extraordinary there; I'd guess a one in 5-10 year event.

There were only 3 stations with a new record:
-28.7°C Feb 6, 2012 Ueckermünde (-28.2°C Feb 15, 1956)
-16.8°C Feb 7, 2012 Oldenburg (-16.6°C Jan 2, 1997)
-21.3°C Feb 6, 2012 Neubrandenburg (-19.4°C Jan 26, 2010)
Oberstdorf's record low is -32.0°C at Feb 10, 1956. Frankfurt/Airport had a low of -16.0°C at Feb 11, 2012 - record all-time low for the weather station at the airport is -23.8°C at Jan 19, 1940. Record monthy low for Februar is -21.5°C at Feb 12, 1929.

Reached yesterday a max of 14.6°C at 2.00 pm. Next week we could get temperatures around 15-18°C. There is a posibility to break my old February record of 15.3°C in the upcoming days.
If this happens, February 2012 would be very extrem (from -15.7°C to 15°C+ ?). ~30 K difference between max and min in a month is very very rare in our moderate climate.

That is an extreme difference in temperatures for one month! Did you break the February record?

@Cloudz: No, we didn't break our old record. But it's still a huge difference (30.3 K !!) between the two extrems. That's the biggest difference between max and min sicne I started my own observations back in September 2007. Old record was April 2010 with a max of 28.3°C and min of -1.6°C (29.9 K).
Right now (5.42 pm) cloudy, +8.3°C, 53% humidity, 1016.8 hPa pressure. Next week could be very fine with a lot of sunshine and temperatures above 15°C. Spring arrives!

Still really nice Spring weather here with a clear sky and 14.3°C. The sunny and warm weather here will stay for the rest of the week. Current webcam-pic from the Skyline of Frankfurt (2.14 pm) On thursday morning I'm flying again to Orlando, Florida. I'm back at April 6!

Thanks for sharing SkylineFFM. It does look like a nice sunny day, though looking a bit hazy. I like the juxtaposition of the older buildings in the foreground and the modern skyscrapers toward the background. Love the look of that cathedral in the centre of the image too.

Wow looks like a nice place there Skyline. Wie ist das Wetter jetzt? ( Hope that's correct, mein Deutsch ist ein bisschen schlecht ) I have a friend who lives over there in Köln or Cologne, I'm not sure of the proximity to Frankfurt but I think it's relatively close. She was complaining last time I talked to her a month or so ago about how cold it was and how she was so sick of the snow.

@ Seabreeze: The Frankfurt Saint Bartholomeus's Cathedral is a very important church in Germany. A lot of kings and emperors from the Holy Roman Empire were crowned in this cathedral. @ PV Weather: Haha, very good! Das Wetter derzeit ist zwar sonnig, aber es soll heute nachmittag wieder Regenschauer geben. Cologne is about 200 km from Frankfurt by car. For you Australians this would be a short trip, but for us Germans it's a long trip. But fortunatly we do have the Autobahn, so we can drive 200 km in just 1 1/2 hours (if there isn't a traffic jam). Right now it's quiet good here. Nice conditions with sun and a few clouds and 13.4°C. But showers and light thunderstorms are approaching from the BeNeLux-Countries.

Had a small heatwave over here in the last week. Hottest temperature was 37°C recorded in Bad Kreuznach.
Max and Min from my station: July 24: 29.8°C / 12.5°C July 25: 33.0°C / 16.6°C July 26: 34.1°C / 18.3°C July 27: 35.8°C / 18.9°C
Today we have very humid and uncomfortable conditions. Max was only 27°C but with lots of thunderstorms, rain and a few hours of sunshine dew point was around 20-21°C.
Tomorrow only around 22°C but drier, but next week temperatures will climb again up to 30°C.

The next heatwave is ready to come. The weather forecast right now in radio or tv is just so shocking to hear or watch. On Sunday we will get more than 35°C all over the country, 40-41°C is possible in the south-western parts at the French border.
We could beat the all-time record high for Germany this Sunday. The record to beat is 40.3°C observed at August 8, 2003 in Perl-Nennig.
Here in my region we will get 38-39°C. So the record high for Frankfurt could be beaten (39.2°C recorded in August 2003, too).

Looks like it didn't get quite as hot as expected - highest I've seen was 38.4. (It's possible it got a bit higher at sites which don't report internationally, but I'd be surprised if anywhere reached 40).
