Ahh About time. I was wondering why dates created a determined time frame for a dry season thread when realistically it occured several weeks ago.

Often in the NWEST the dry season kicks in during mid March. This year it has been chopping and changing for a while now but since cyclone LUa 5 weeks ago there has been a definate shift towards the dry season. Up and down and all over the place but it hasn't rained for a while now. Dry season is set in place definately until mid Nov at the earlieste and reastically there is nothing to report other than paradise in the NWest until October 2012.

Will be some Strong Wind/Gale warnings for the Nwest over the next few days. One of those thumping big Highs directing some persistant easterlies over us. Bugger for work but you have to expect a few every year. This one looks to be a big one.

Broomes coldest May night on records (71 years) last night at 8.1 degrees. The winds have been relentless this week with only now a weakening shown in the late afternoons. Have had 4 days off work which is a first for May. Hope this is not a trend for this season.

Record cold hits WA Kimberley
Brett Dutschke, Monday May 28, 2012 - 09:49 EST
Western Australia's Kimberley has been shivering during the last few nights as record-breaking cold hits the region.

On Saturday and Sunday night much of the region experienced its lowest May temperatures in more than a decade. Broome has broken the record twice in two nights, dipping to 8.1 degrees on Saturday night then 7.7 last night, both more than 10 degrees below average.

On Sunday night Fitzroy Crossing was one of the coldest centres, getting as cold as 6.0 degrees, also 10 below average. This is its coldest May night in at least 15 years.

West Roebuck dipped to 6.2 degrees on Sunday night after a chilling 5.5 on Saturday night, which was its coldest May night in at least 13 years.

Saturday night was also the coldest for May in more than a decade for Mt Elizabeth and Wyndham airport, cooling to 0.5 and 9.6 degrees respectively.

Dry southeasterly winds have been affecting the Kimberley and much of WA for a week now and have combined with mostly clear skies to bring colder-than-average nights.

Nights have also been noticeably cold in the south of the state, where Perth had its equal coldest May night in more than 100 years of records. It got as low was 1.3 degrees last Thursday night, equalling the record May low, set in 1913.

Sunday night was Esperance's coldest May night in five years, recording a minimum of 6.5 degrees, five below average.

Looking ahead, the next few nights will get progressively warmer starting from tonight, although the north of the state should still be about five degrees colder than average as we enter the first week of winter. Skies will stay mostly clear in the north and winds will stay dry.

In the south of the state, the Esperance area will have one or two more cold nights due to clearing skies, but the Perth area should warm up significantly with help from increasing cloud. This cloud will bring a few showers to the southwest on Thursday, including Perth. However, these showers are not likely to reach as far inland as the wheat belt, maintaining its lengthy dry spell.

Mount Elizabeth got down to -0.9 on Monday morning, the first time it has dropped below 0 at any Kimberley site in May (or, for that matter, at any time outside the window of 26 June to 5 August).

Is that a possible North West cloud band forming on the Access G model around the 10th of June?

Talk about a compex LOW forming off the west Pilbara coast over the next week with rains forecast extensively down through the gascoyne and SW. Will be interesting to watch this event unfold and how far reaching it will be. As long as it puts an end to these easterlies I will be happy. Not sure if it will get anywhere near here.

I wonder if we can call them WCL which is West Coast Low. The east has them ECL's and so far its looking promising according to some of the models.

Be warned Popeye... how dare you discuss things above the tropical line LOL
Either way it looks like Perth is going to swiped by what is going to turn into a seriously, seriously deep low as it dips into the southern ocean.
No bad thing in some ways... that region could certainly use a drink.
Dammit I've done it too... it just so unforumlike of me.

Off our Northern Waters forecast from this arvo which mentions a possible secondary low developing off the west Pilbara coast.

Synoptic Situation
A strong ridge of high pressure lies to the south of the continent, while a
trough and complex low pressure system lie well off the west coast. A low may
develop off the west Pilbara coast on Wednesday.

Havn't seen a June rainfall map like this for a while. Good falls throughout the majority of the western half of the state.

Another huge string of strong easterlies forecast for this weekend into next week. Killing work on the water. Usually they ease right off in the afternoons but these systems this season are blowing right through until sunset. Mongrel easterlies. I hate them!!

I wouldn't mind betting that low forming west of Shark Bay out there pushes closer to the coast.

Yeah weather has been consistent easterlies for alot more than normal. Which sucks with work. Been battling through though and getting out most days. Peak tourist season is here now with all the School holiday rush continuing for the next 3-4 weeks. Chaos really especially with forecasts like this for the next week. The dips in the wind in the evenings are pretty nice though.

Still might be planning on a move down to Tassie for the summer season kayaking Nov-March. Just waiting on some big approvals from Parks Tasmania.

Interesting weather with the fog lingering around for most of the day yesterday. High humidity and forecast warmer than usual build-up season. I spoke to a Broome and peninsula local yesterday who reckons that with this sort of weather now it means more cyclones in the season. Folklore or real indicator? We shall see!

After a couple of late winter days of up around 37degrees lol we are officially having a change of season with the strengthening onshore Westerlies arriving. Up to 20+knots this arvo. Sept is just a few days off. Been a busy season tourism wise. Aussie $$ having a bit of an impact to overall visitor numbers to the Kimberley but overall I think Broome has done well considering. Looking forward to seeing some inland build up over the next 6-8 weeks. Planning the big road trip up over the top end into the NT and down the centre in Nov all the way across to Tassie for Summer. Should be fun but will miss the 12 thunderstorms Broome will get lol before getting back in Late March.
