Awoke to a Snow capped Mt.Wellington this morning. Snow dusting down to about 300 meters. I guess they will be driving around town this morning with the snowman on the bonnet as usual. Also blew like a demon last night. House was creaking and shuddering. Will try to upload a few pics this arvo after work.

Thanks H20 - that is low - my house in Ridgeway would have seen some for sure. I loved driving to town with snow all over my car. I was trying to gauge it off the Wrest Point Cam but it doesn't show up clear enough. I estimated The Springs but it was obviously better than that.

Hey Snowies - that rain really shows up now as you said. You're very right about seeing the rainshadow effects etc. We can work out which ranges of Mtns are blocking quite easily. It would have been great to have that radar when our group was more active.

Cradle should have done OK - Waratah must have had some settle too?

Mawson looking lovely and bleak with plenty of the white stuff. Look at that thick cloud over Tas ATM, looks to be hammering the Central Plateau.

For sure SB some higher areas will be getting quite decent snow. The SW ranges especially, The Arthurst, Mt Anne, Hartz, Snowy Range (Nevada Peak etc) Mt Field for sure and of course up into the middle Mt Rufus, Cheyne Range, Olympus, Ossa etc some of them I expect would have drifts already approaching a metre in wind blown spots.

Look at the Sat Pic there is a train of moisture going right through Tas with plenty to come - see that really long tail west and south of Tas maybe 1000km long.

Some good rainfall totals - Strathgordon 31, Scotts Peak and Lake St Clair 33, Warra 41, though not much snow at the mid-level stations suggesting most of it fell as rain/sleet. At 9am, Liawenee (1058m) had 5cm snow on ground with light snow falling, Tarraleah (585m) 2cm moderate snow, Lake St Clair (740m) 1cm with moderate snow, but LSC reported 25.4mm rain in the gauge + 8mm melted snow which equates with 8cm snow falling overnight. Mt Read (1120m) only had 14.8mm to 9am with sub-zero temps (just) overnight. Mt Wellington (1260m) only had 0.4mm with overnight temps hovering between -2 and -3. I do wonder how much snow the Mt Wellington gauge misses in strong wind conditions, as it's very exposed (just west of the carpark).

I think there will be a fair bit of slushy stuff around except at the highest levels. 850hPa temps (1400m) are expected to keep hovering around -2 or -3 until early Monday morning according to GFS giving a freezing level of 900-1000m. Allowing for some radiation warming, Liawenee's current (11.30am) temp of 0.9 seems to agree with that.

I would love to be sitting down on an isolated beach on the West coast of Tassie this arvo watching this cloud formation rolling through. Maybe Strahan might see it in a few hours. It would be an interesting sight to see. Any guesses as to what has formed this cloud structure pictured below.

Pops - I was looking at that cloud on the Sat heaps of times - I'm not sure when I'd last seen one quite like it before.

Been away in Melbourne and enjoyed some of last weekends mega rain while I was there
Nothing to report this week so far down here in Hobart , just more warm sunny days that are above average . You wouldn't think it was the first day of Winter. A very warm night last night and a very warm day for the first day of Winter.
Looking forward to the weekend when the temps and rain should come our way ? I would appreciate if anybody out there can tell me if they think that it will actually happen .

I suspect southern peaks may see a flake or two tomorrow, wind is quite southerly so really only the southerly ranges might see a little bit.

Quite a good chance of snow on higher ground (depending on precip) on several days next week. Winds look to be very southerly or SW down there which again means mainly southern and maybe central areas. The Ben would be dry I think.

Hi all , Well received basically nothing from the recent Lows. A brief couple of cooler overcast days and a few showers. Bright and sunny here now and not a cloud in sight. Nothing much on the outlook either with more Highs sitting on top of us. Forecast is for 14 to 15 degrees for the rest of the week.Already shaping up for another above average month , I wish the highs would just go away.
Another interesting thing that allot of bulbs have already sprung up in the garden , usually happens at the beginning of spring or late winter. Have they been fooled with all the warm weather.

Hello H2O I saw a (Tassie) news item on Tv this week and I noticed some bulbs out in the shot. Early for sure. These Cut off low events are annoying for Taswegians because the state gets bypassed. I used to hate cut off lows hitting the mainland when I lived in Tas.

I was in tassie all last week walking the Overland Track. I was quite suprised that I had no really bad weather on the 9 days I was on the track (as I was actually hoping for a system to come through and make the area a winter wonderland...). The first few mornings were frosty (my dodgy thermometer had a reading of -4C at New Pelion Hut on the Wednesday morning) and then the cloud came in with some drizzle the for latter half of the week, keeping things mild. There was still some ice on the high peaks and very few patches of snow at the end.

Hello Scooteroo - snow in Tassie tends not to last long between falls until well into winter. Shame you didn't get to see some fall though. O/T is a great walk. Did you enjoy D'Alton, Fergusson, Hartnett Falls etc? D'Alton Falls is my all time favourite. I've seen it under heavy snow and otherwise.

I did quite a few side trips, including Pine Valley, but of the falls I only did Hartnett, which was amazing. The way I figured it is that I need to save something for next time I might go back a bit later in the winter next year, or the years to come, to hopefully see it under snow, will be tough walking though. Looks like there might be some snow coming late this weekend down there and a follow up next weekend.

I've walked in from the Lake St Clair end to Windy Ridge and Pine Valley/Labyrinth on several occasions in solid snow - it's actually wonderful. Bit hard to find the track in virgin snow but a magnificent place under snow.

On our way to Windy Ridge it began snowing abd we settled into the hut for the night - it had snowed heavily overnight, we knew it was coming but didn't expect quite so much.

Next morning we awoke to very heavy snow everywhere, approx 20 to 30 cm but drifts MUCH greater. We headed off to go over Du Cane Gap to the waterfalls as a day trip and only because I knew where the trail went were we able to find our way without any usual visual clues. All the undergrowth was burdened down with snow so you could not see clear paths - what a great day that was, one of the absolute best of my walking life as an experience. I had some ladies with me who'd never been in there in those conditions (nor ever seen the falls) and apart from slight nervousness at first they also rated it about the best thing they had ever done too.

Another trip we headed from Lake St Clair to Pine Valley and it began snowing heading in (which we expected). Next day we headed up to the Labyrinth with about 15 - 20cm snow everywhere and the cloud absolutely on the deck - we could only see one or two hundred metres generally but it was so magical and slightly eerie but great.

Therefore Scooteroo - as long as you're prepared for it etc it can be stunning to be there in heavy snow. Common sense needs to be applied very much though whilst in there and good decisions made, if all that happens - one word - MAGIC.

You have to see D'Alton Falls it is very different to Hartnett and I think easily superior.

If you want to walk there under snow August/September most likely times for snow falls in my experience there.

I had a report that the snow is nice and thick at Ronnie Creek at the moment. Would be good to go back next week...

weather constantly changing, sunny, rainy, frost, snow... last night it was 0 at 9:30pm and rained at 5am. Hasn't been a decent low level snowfall for 12 months - might change a bit tomorrow night/Monday, decent looking cold air stream pushing up behind the front.

Felt like we went from Summer to Winter and almost by passed autumn this year, suddenly went from mild to cold sometime May, certainly on the coast where it doesn't get hot summer days, so you don't get the contrast.
