Was up there last wednesday and was a little snow on the ground. Was raining at the time and the snow was disappearing quick so will have to wait for another good system.

There was some sleet between 5pm and 6pm, but no other precip before I had to leave at 9.30pm.

It looks like the radar may have shown a light fall right around midnight.

That's disappointing. I doubt there was anything better later in the evening though. Even the updated chart for 7pm was downgraded:

GFS doesn't look very promising to me! The cold 850 temperatures will be there from Sunday afternoon but I'm not seeing the moisture. At this stage it looks too dry for snow...

Today's 00z run is now showing some good precipitation for 4pm Sunday. It hasn't been very consistent...!

Graeme Creed on 702 mentioned the possibility of snow 'in the upper Hunter' later on Sunday.

Is anyone snow-chasing at Barrington Tops this weekend? Today's 00z run has 850temps at 1-2 degrees with 80% humidity for Friday evening. It might be borderline but in with a chance...?

Anyone heading up the Barringtons early tomorrow morning?
Snow up there now, no question about it at all. Given those conditions at Taree, those are like the conditions there when I have driven up to find a winter wonderland with 20cm of snow. Radar shows the showers pumping through also. Models only have the chances for a few hours but if it lasted the night would be pretty good morning up there.

This evening it is a what I would call a near perfect setup for snow on the Tops. There is a good SSE trajectory and the 850hpa temps are still relatively cold. Though the snow will be more confined to the higher parts (~1200m and higher). If I was in the Hunter at this time, I would be up there at first light tomorrow.

EDIT: The latest radar is showing some reasonable shower activity over the Tops at this moment.

Just arrived back at my home base.

Snow Report: Barrington Tops

Arrived at Dingo gate 17:00 - light drizzle.
Proceded to Polblue camp ground - Intermittent snow showers consisting of (to use the Kellogs scale of texture) rice bubbles when windy to soggy cornflakes while calm. Snow was not staying on the ground for more than a few minutes.
Drove around my usual loop (Paddy's Ridge to Tomalla and return to Polblue via Pheasant Ck) and encountered everything from "a few flakes" to "slow right down and dip the lights". Snow gave way to rain at approx 1250M ASL.
Left polblue at 18:30 - similar conditions to when I arrived.
Departed from Dingo gate at 19:00 - fat flakes were falling.

Considering the radar animation for the last few hours, I believe there may be enough snow in the morning to risk the NPWS lockout syndrome. Let's hope they don't do it.

Cheers, Scott.

Thanks for the report, not as good as I thought then. Thought it would be at least settling at that time.

Thanks for the report, Scott.

I am very surprised that it was so lacking. I thought the conditions would have been more than cold enough to allow for the snow to accumulate on the ground.
