Quite a fantastic little event occurring in parts of the Sth Island atm. A friend of mine posted some pics on her FB page with snow coverage outside her front door. The Met have forecasted snow showers for the rest of the day:

I think it would magical to be on the shore of Sumner just outside the city and see snow falling over the beach.... a photographer's paradise!
Here's the webcam:

These low level snow events in NZ anecdotally are becoming more frequent while our snow is diminishing, it's not fair. I'd say 10 cm+ has fallen now:

Interestingly Kaikoura on 3C and raining whilst Dunedin is 5C, must be a compact pulse of cold air.

Thanks for that link SB!

Mt Hutt got 50cm of snow over night too, whilst the more southern resorts only got minor falls.... so i think you're right, very compact.

I've been to Arthurs Pass on a few occasions, even with a bit of snow around.... but this takes the cake!

The snow was a warm advective snow event with Tasman Sea moisture over running a cold layer near the surface. Precipitable water values were around 20-25mm for this event which is quite high for a snow storm.

An amazing clip here of a train ploughing snow at Arther Pass.

After 10 years in Hobart where storms were almost non existent, I'm sort of used to not having them although being back in Bathurst is allowing a new fascination for them.

NZ is simply stunning that's for sure especially for a snow lover like me. So many magic mountains with easy access (at least to the base of them) smile

Wanaka & Queenstown areas just blow me away. The trip from Te Anau to Milford would be icy much of the time now. I remember skating through there a few years ago in ye ole hire car in May, quite exciting at times above the Homer tunnel.

In my perfect world... I'd be 6 months in the South Island (above 700m... maybe Tekapo or some place down Queenstown way) and 6 months near the SEQ/NE NSW border. Snow and storms grin

Relatives in Christchurch reported today still plenty of snow around; no surprise... it was a great dump of snow.
