Thanks Roves for filling us in with that info - most of us would not have known that, and it's a good demonstration of how complex and subtle the influences of weather on agriculture can be, and of the skills and knowledge a farmer needs to make the most of land and weather. I see that BoM are predicting significant precipitation for the eastern districts around Monday-Tuesday: "Accumulated rainfall amounts from Friday afternoon through to midnight Tuesday are expected to be 2 to 10 mm over districts east of the ranges with possible local falls of up to 20 mm. Falls of up to 2 mm is expected elsewhere." Good photos Chris! Your pics reminded me of the days when I used to enjoy going out at dawn and frolicking about through the frosty grass lol.

I hope the overnight lows start climbing soon and some rain (+20 mm) is on the horizon.

#1105039 - 21-05-2012 10:53 AM: Sounds bracing Naz - any colder and the river there will freeze over - you'll be able to walk across it Not there yet (I think!?)…but wonder what sort of plung in temp might…

It's hard to believe that it's taken me this long to realize that "willitrainagain" is not will-i-train-again but will-it-rain-again. I kept thinking why would anyone call themselves will-i-train-again lol. I noticed that BoM have firmed up their predictions a bit for this coming event including for tuesday "Areas of rain on and east of the ranges easing to isolated showers during the morning" and "Accumulated rainfall amounts from Saturday through to midnight Wednesday are expected to be less than 5 mm, reaching 5 to 10 mm about western coastal parts, and 5 to 20 mm for areas on and east of the ranges."

Seen something amazing today... 23 kangaroos in one paddock munching away, a further 8 kangaroos 500m down the road, and a another 5 kangaroos 1km further down. You do often see large groups around the place, up to about 8 I have seen, 23 is something else, completely wild kangaroos all in one large group, crazy. Must be something right about the conditions this year, creeks are finally starting to flow properly even with below average rainfall, springs through spring gully are flowing well, native animals are breeding well, infact the possums are finally starting to become widespread once more...ash wednesday all but wiped them out. It seems the land has finally recovered from the horible droughts of the 2000's

There's a solar flare heading our way tonight due to hit at 6:45 pm. Slight chance we might see aurora activity in the south of the state if the clouds clear.

Well last nights sleep was useless so early in the morning met up with a mate and went out to find something, anything to photograph. Thick fog engulfed the ranges, so we headed down to the plains. What greeted us was the most amazing milky way display I have seen in the area, was so incredibly bright. Must have been the freezing air and recent rains. Perhaps the most incredible thing was the way a thick bank of ground/orographic fog which sat 50m behind us with visibility down to 50m in places through it, yet only being 20-30m thick, and looking over the plains not a single cloud in sight. Later on as the sun rose, the fog dispersed extremely quickly, 100m visibility, ten minutes later, sunny. Some nice colour resulted, I have seen very few fogs like this personally, however apparently they are quite common in these hills (Armagh Hills), something ill have to explore further.

Some speccie photos there Markus particularly the milky way and the kangaroos Outstanding photo the milky way one. Can you describe it in three dimensions for us - are we looking from our position in our arm of the galaxy towards another arm closer to the centre of the galaxy, with the galactic centre beyond that closer arm and approx in the middle of the photo?
