Hi everyone!

Firstly, apologies for the late notice, but we have arranged a visit to the Bureau observer office at the Airport, as well as their main office in the city, next weekend on Saturday June 16. Following the tour of the offices, we’ll have a BBQ at Captain Burke Park which gives views of the city and the river while catching up with everyone.

We will have a limit of around 15-20 people that we can take on the tour (strict limit of 20) so make sure you get in quick!

Details:

Stop 1: Brisbane Airport Observer Office
Time: 10am
Location: Off Pandanus Ave, near Myrtletown on the eastern side of the airport.

Coming from the north, take the Old Gateway to access Airport Drive, from there you can get onto Lomandra Drive and up to the Observer Office from there.
Coming from the south, take the Kingsford Smith Drive exit just after the Old Gateway exit, and from there it becomes Eagle Farm Rd and heads up to the Observer Office.
Of course if you’re coming from the city, westside or other parts of the northside, Lomandra Drive/Airport Drive or Kingsford Smith Drive are the key roads you’re looking for here.

Stop 2:
Brisbane City Regional Office
Time: Approx 11-11:30am
Location: 69 Ann St, Brisbane CBD
We will congregate out the front before beginning the tour.
Parking: There is a council carpark in King George Square ($12 on weekends) which is 200m walk to the Bureau’s offices. Access is from Adelaide Street (http://goo.gl/maps/H5mQ). However there may of course be cheaper parking available on the roads surrounding.

Stop 3: BBQ Lunch with soft drinks provided
Time: Approx 12:30-1pm
Location: Captain Burke Park, meet on the western side where we will set up at one of the benches (which are undercover).

BBQ: https://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=-27.465399,153.034589&ll=-27.46518,153.034846&spn=0.003327,0.005681&num=1&t=h&z=18

Cost for BBQ - $2 for ASWA members, $5 for non-members.
Cost for tour – free.

Please RSVP to myself at daveserc@hotmail.com by next Wed, June 13
so we can get our final numbers for catering and to let the Bureau know also.

Again, sorry for the late notice, but hopefully you will all enjoy this one off opportunity and also a chance to socialise with everyone for a few hours!

Sounds great Dave!!! Put me down for a +1 for the tour, and +2 for the BBQ.

This is a fantastic opportunity to see how the BOM operates and ask any questions. It'd be great to see as many of you there and at the BBQ after as possible smile

And don't forget (speaking if ASWA events) - its only 56 days until AGM on the Gold Coast!! If you haven't already, be sure to get your tickets to this as well, as it's going to be an awesome weekend! smile

Hey Dean...was originally thinking of Wilson Outlook Reserve for the BBQ but there is a bit more car parking and better facilities at Captain Burke Park, along with the Holman St ferry stop which is literally 20-50m walk from the park benches/undercover areas.

Hi everyone,

Really dissappointed to announce that the Bureau have cancelled the city part of the tour. However the visit to the observer office at the airport is still on, and I know Cam has some nifty things to show us when we get there! Cameron Hines is one of the Bureau's observers at the airport and a long time friend of many ASWA members, and is coming in on his day off to show us around. As a result we will not only be limiting interruption to those on duty, but get a VIP tour from one of the regulars who mans the airport office!

See everyone on Saturday!

A bit after the fact but here's a story I wrote for a regional newspaper (Outback City Express) about this visit, which refreshingly removes some of the mystery that shrouds the BoM in some people's eyes.

Cheers,
