There is no real wet weather on the way for a while yet with no penetration of the fronts as they are falling apart up against the ever present high pressure ridge.

Would be nice if this pesky high pressure ridge would bugger off so we can get some good old fashioned severe weather events.

Got pretty cold here last night, -3 in main street, colder in the usual spots. So annoying how every night the wind has picked up and prevented a massive frost, -6.6 at Yunta almost a new record! Im sure the residents there would be getting tired of it smile

These are taken near Kirribilly Winery sorta, probs a few km's south further up Hill River Valley. Wind seemed to have less of an effect this side of the ranges, frost was over halfway to the top of the surrounding ranges but on the other side there was no frost, seems the hills stopped the cold escaping here. This thermometer was placed in a tree sheltered with leaves about 50 cm off the ground. So not entirely accurate, but still cold enough.

wow, is that photo markus really from this morning!! That looks like the middle of summer, I hope you guys get some rain....

GFS has downgraded a little for here, only predicting 150 mm in the next week now. Slightly breezy here too, dont know if you guys over east have heard a lot about the weather here....hopefully the rain will make its way over east - not the wind though, else Victoria would get all the topsoil from SA.

Agreed Roves it doesn't look promising for much rain in the northern ags including your district for the first few days. Listening to the BoM forecaster on the country hour I got the impression that next Sunday might see a few showers pushing more inland when the wind is more to the south.
I like your photos Markus and well done for getting out into the freezing air to observe the scene at close quarters and take the photos
cheers

Patterns are starting to change, look what's happening currently in WA..
Showers on the menu from tomorrow for the rest of the week for Adelaide but not much penetration inland... it will be mostly coastal areas who see the better falls, at this stage anyway..

TS Thunderstruck has launched a system thread with one of his typically comprehensive thread-starting analyses here smile

Not sure how widely it's been reported, but the -6.6 at Yunta yesterday was the lowest temperature in SA since 2006.

and according to a WZ media release:
Adelaide has just ended its coldest run of nights in 30 years. For the first time since 1982, the city had four consecutive nights cooling below 3.5 degrees.

SD you've raising an important issue in the current system thread which I'd like to comment on.
Quote SD: "I have to say I was a quite surprised to see a thread started for this system as it lacks no penetration at all(all models agree).. as I said in the general SA weather thread it will mostly effect the southern coasts with all the so called fronts dying on out door step!"

A key sentence in the forum guidelines is
"Threads should be based around a weather system that is expected to produce significant weather."
Note that it doesn't say significant weather on our doorstep - there's no reference to the on our doorstep part. It only needs to be significant weather in South Australia to qualify. And also we need to remember that our doorsteps are scattered very widely in South Australia including a few on or near our coasts.
I repeat for everyone reading this smile
"Threads should be based around a weather system that is expected to produce significant weather."

Some of you may know that former South Aussie ASWA member, Rowland Beardsell (Lennie), has moved back here from working at the Darwin Bureau of Meteorology. He will be starting at the Adelaide office in a few weeks, which is great news for us! smile
So this is a chance to also catch up with him, or meet him for the first time. I'm sure he will be happy to answer any questions about his time in Darwin, and the storms up there. He may also bring some video footage to show.

Also for those interested, the annual ASWA Conference details are now online.

So would have loved to come down to catch up... I'm actually free tomorrow, but have the very worst cold and I sure don't want to be sharing it around with everyone... it's bad.

So, have a drink or two on me and I'll hopefully catch you all next time. smile

I just noticed the BoM state forecast for this coming Wednesday until Friday:

"Patchy rain developing over coastal districts on Wednesday before extending to remaining agricultural and southern Pastoral areas on Thursday. Showers following the rain on Thursday as cooler southwesterly winds extend across the State."

I haven't had time to look at charts or rainfall predictions.

Sorry I was unable to attend the catch up again today. Seems I'm destined never to meet up with my fellow weatherzoners. My health is a concern at the moment, most of all a bad back that has me moving around like an old, old man. I hope you all had a great time smile

Nice photo there Tim T smile The sun often finds blue sky down on the western horizon a bit before sunset in winter in our neck of the woods.
There was another phenomenon characteristic of winter here at Payneham yesterday. There was a low cloud cover - misty and with some misty drizzle and everything dripping wet in the morning and early in the arvo, and then about mid-arvo there was a significant dense-dropped shower, followed the the clearing of much of the cloud and the sun shining from blue sky. I have seen this same basic pattern numerous times over the years - a period of soggy low cloud and mist and mizzle which eventually ends with a shower and a clearing sky. If I remember correctly TS Thunderstruck gave an explanation of this years ago but I've forgotten it.

Yes, it was something i haven't seen before, the rain just stopped around 240, and then there was just blue sky ! No clouds, Just blue. But towards the east it was black as night !
