Yeah , definitely felt it here ( Near Frankston ) .....
Unfortunately was dozing on the couch , but woke the whole house wife & 2 kids .
Didn't feel the intial " Sway" , but presume was what woke me up , almost rolled off the couch . ( have been in Indonesia during some solid ones , so half sleepy reaction , was to " get to high ground " , but then reality of realising was back in Aust. kicked in and enjoyed the rest of it .
I swear i could feel the rumble . see saw effect to be East to west . So was was surprised to be right that it's Epicentre was due East of here .
There's been a few more in Vic in the last ten years , than the Twenty preceding that for Sure ...

Definitely the biggest I've ever felt, and I'm up in Wangaratta. It felt different to others I've experienced - I was in my lounge chair at the time and the force moved me up and down a few times like I was in a boat going over a series of waves. It all happened so quick but I swear I saw the walls move a bit too. Absolutely freaky stuff!!

There are two main types of seismic wave that spread out from an earthquake hypocentre: P-wave: the primary (or "Push") wave that arrives first, travelling at several kilometres per second; S-wave: the Secondary (or "Shake") wave that arrives later. "A quick way to determine the distance from a location to the origin of a seismic wave less than 200 km away is to take the difference in arrival time of the P wave and the S wave in seconds and multiply by 8 kilometers per second." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seismic_waveAt Manilla, the June 8 earthquake S-wave arrived about 10 seconds after the P-wave, indicating a distance (to the west) of 80 km. I am only guessing the 10 seconds. Armidale, in the "not available" seismogram, had the S-wave 13 seconds after the P-wave, giving a distance of 104 km. This agrees with the official first estimate of the epicentre location.

This is a pic of the brick movement on my decking, below a window. Will have to refit window I think - gap has exposed the frame. Obviously though, the damage at the epicentre and in other places will be more substantial. [img:left] By duckweathervic at 2012-06-19[/img]

Reposted We will rebuild image to FB - Love it. Because earthquakes/tremors are faily rare in Australia the media hype went into over drive even before any offical reports had been issued. Plenty of panic and lots of rumours etc. Having lived in PNG and having tremors on an almost daily basis in some location we lived in we too where pretty frightened when it happened but after a couple of days soon got used to them.

That "we we rebuild" picture does the rounds every time there's a small earthquake. last appearance was the little Canberra earthquake a few weeks back.

It is somewhat curious. Maybe I shouldn't think this, but I am imagining some sort of 'line' (related) from Macquarie Is. - to melb. - through to NSW? Or maybe it is just pure imagination

If there is a volcano forming in bass Strait the pressure on the plate would be immense. Even though its not on the edge of the plate its stressing and weakening and being squeezed to the vertical.
Geologists say that the 2002 tremor at Flinders Island re-awakened the area and have identified it as Australias hot spot. Hence the forecast of larger quakes to come.
