Not one to frequent the NSW list, I started a thread for this event on the Alpine and Snow list, wondering why I seemed to be talking to myself on the 2012 Snow Season thread. Now I see where you all were.

Why on earth, though, is this thread not in it's proper place. The Alpine and Snow list is described as "Snow - wherever it may occur! Alpine weather. Snow in non-Alpine areas. Long-range snow outlooks. Snow chase reports." In short, it includes snow that may be limited to one state, although this event affects VIC and TAS very significantly.

We have always discussed NSW and in particular CT snow on the Alpine and Snow list previously. If each state discusses snow in its own boundaries, the effect will be to make the Alpine and Snow list redundant. More importantly, the very useful reports that come in these discussions will be fragmented across lists where they are swamped by non-snow discussions.

I'd strongly suggest one of the mods move it to the correct list, and that future snow discussions - whichever part of the country they apply to - stay there.

I suspect it's going to be a miniscule dump in the NSW skifields.

So you disagree with jane?
http://www.janesweather.com/index.php/alpine
45cm to 80cm ..sounds pretty fare and reasonable to me.

sheesh...attack of the pessimists on here..as usual.

er, no, I expressed the opinion that the Vic skifields would do a lot better than the NSW ones, despite the widespread sweep of the news story. I do not know who "Jane" is. I may well disagree with them, I probably disagree with a great many people, of whose existences I remain oblivious. Should I perhaps not disagree with this "Jane"?

As for being a pessimist, might I not hold my own opinion without having people like you attach perjorative labels? If you hold a different view, then post it, and I will do you the courtesy of not attacking you over it.

In the meantime, cultivate the skill of holding an opinion without having to attack someone who holds a different one.

WEll I'll be getting out of work early in the afternoon, take my little sister to the BM after school and hope for a bit of snow from Blackheath and the OP.

The signs looks quite positive smile

Just for the record, the thread for this event on the Alpine and Snow list [here] has taken life, and I'll be using it. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused, but I think it's the right place for it to be.

Is it possible to move this thread to the Alpine forum please? I only started it in here following Peter Dukes lead of a few weeks ago.

I will be heading up to Mt.Selwyn with Pingtang either tomorrow or Sunday to do some photography and hopefully some snow footage.
There seems to be about 10cm or so far in that location smile

4.2/3.5 here & raining. Still 6-9 hours until the coldest air is forecast to arrive. If the moisture holds up I think we will at least see some wet snow at this elevation. Higher up could do a lot better than that. Charts suggest that the further south the better with regards to upper temps so Black Springs / Trickett and Kanangra areas above 1200m may see some decent settling.

Greg, we may get away there on Sunday; the daughter looks to have a bit of a cold so it'll depend on how she's feeling whether we go or stay (and unfortunately a few jobs around the house). But I'll let you know if we head up there.

In the mean time it's bitterly cold outside; would have to be 8-9C in full sun and much less when a shower passes over.

Looks like a solid 30-40cm for NSW resorts so far. Colder air aloft moving through tonight along with the colder 850hPa temps so im thinking a further 15-20cm overnight. Going to be bloody cold in the alps as well which should freeze the wetter stuff that fell last night/today rock hard. Excellent start to the season for Perisher and the like. Looks a bit marginal for Thredbo down low unfortunately. Tonight should see to the lower parts of the mountain however.

The camera at Valley Terminal was showing rain for most of the day but in the past hour is starting to show snow. Also seeing snow on the Friday Flats camera lens which is also a good sign.

Having said this, they must be building a nice stash of snow higher up the mountain which bodes well heading into July.

Michael Keene and i headed down to Perisher after there was a downgrade in expected snow for Selwyn. The thought being that having access to higher ground would provide a better chance to see some fall. And that we did, only it was crappy sleety / small snow showers, so nothing as per our expectations. I'd say we had winds averaging around 30-40km at times, which really made it hard to even get decent still images once footage was out of the question. You just had to keep on wiping off small icy droplets from the lens all the time.... frustrating.

We hung around the Diggers Creek area (across from Sponars Chalet). There was some good spots to get a shot or 2. The pond in front of the Chalet was frozen and there was this water jet spraying into the pond, which created some great isce sculptures along the foreshore.

We also ducked over to the Guthega rd which was only accessible for cars & 4wd with chains. Although i have a 4wd, i decided not to chance it on that road. There were still patches around the Island Bend area actually, there would be some cold campers last Friday for sure:)

I love that last photo Greg. Well done!!
Curious to know how you take photos directly into the sun while still getting the exposure right.
Tips greatly appreciated.

Gee Greg nice photos - as usual!!

I like the interesting viewpoints you find for these shots - I really want an extra wide lens, it works well with the type of shots you take. You using a 10mm or wider?

Homer - meter elsewhere then recompose, or use spot metering, also I think Greg uses a graduated neutral density filter a fair bit which helps cut down the brightness in the sky vs the land. Any of those techniques can work.

I assume the rock either had fill in flash or maybe just the graduated nd to allow brighter exposure on the snow?

Thanks Dave. I've tried the metering elsewhere thingy and it doesn't always seem to work.
I've got a Canon 300D.
