lol Trav. Deliverence.

Anyhow's, Sydney has been under a SE airstream and a trail of showers today, keeping temps very cool - almost cold. A very damp day indeed.
Radar now though, is showing showers developing and heading down from the north.
This has me slightly confused.
Any explanations anyone?

Just more crap, easterly weather thanks to lack of strong cold fronts. Hard to believe we have to put up with this at this time of year. Drizzle has reached up here as well.

Is it really that suprising Peter? Isn't June normally the wettest Month of the Year in Sydney?

Not surprising that we are getting rain, just the weather pattern that is leading to it is unusual. High pressure system sitting a fair way south in the tasman leading to a breakdown in the westerlies up this way.

Its December weather but 10c colder, next few days will even see N-NE winds. I agree with PD, pretty boring weather for this time of the year.

Its still surprising because this sort of weather is usually done by the first half of June, we are now at the end of June. Eg 2008 had rain at the start, but not much more after. Most of these June rains I think are caused by either ECL's or deep southerlies too, this is neither, just a silly trough over a high like in mid summer.

It has been a mixed bag of a month in Sydney. After rain and gloom for the first half of the month, with temps similar to UK Steve's stats for June in Birmingham in the UK thread (but much wetter), we had 8 consecutive dry days (June 18 to 25) and seven of the last 10 days have been virtually clear (over 9.5 hours' sunshine). Yesterday was chilly, solid grey and persistent light rain. Today has been partly cloudy but I haven't seen any rain.

I do hope Easterlies don't ruin the rest of winter liked they ruined the summer. Easterly has got to be my least favourite wind direction at any time of year.

I note that the BOM has filled in the rainfall data for Observatory Hill for the missing days earlier this month (June 10 to 14). I have not heard back from the BOM about my query re phantom '0.2' readings.

Bit of a chilly start this morning in Canberra, -5.3ºC. Glenn Innes though got down to -8.6ºC.... should be a nice bright sunny day today... that'll warm the spirits.

And -6.1 in the southern suburbs (i.e. Tuggeranong). Nice.

Will this be the lowest for the year? Who wants to place a bet? We got –8°C near the end of July last year.....

What is "summer" anyway? Sunshine? Cloudless skies? or high temperatures?

It is really the Hot Season from about December to March, but we get sunshine, cloud or rain at random times all year round, here.

Doubt it'll be the lowest (especially for the Airport station, maybe for Tuggers). A couple of nights a bit later this week are looking just as good, if not better, for a cold clear night.

Wouldn't count on another -8 though, that kind of temperature is exceptional (like, once a decade exceptional).

-8 would not surprise me at all, just need the right inversion for which you do not need exceptional cold aloft. In fact often the coldest nights have quite warm dry air aloft which should not be hard this winter. Latter this week will give -8 a run for its money I am sure.

Went as low as -9.2 in Walcha earlier. Now -6 under heavy fog. Just walked to work in it and front of jumper and hair nicely coated in ice. Should be specky when the sun breaks through later.

Paltry -4 or so here in Bathurst this morning although that with a heavy fog makes it very cold at the moment.

Glen Innes AP with -10 was the lowest nationally, followed by -8 at Woolbrook then -7 at Inverell, Tenterfield and Goulburn. Coldest areas compared with normal, however, were in the far north. Douglas River in the north of the NT recorded 3.0, 9.8 below the average, while Richmond AP in northern QLD recorded -1.0, 9.4 below the average and equalling its all-time record set back in 2000.

Thanks Ron for keeping us up to date with Walcha's cold minimums.
As usual you beat Armidale by a couple of degrees.
It was -7.4C at the city weather station this morning.
I will give your temp a mention on my radio talk today.

So far this evening is my coldest in 2 years for this time period, currently -1.8. Not sure it will last though, could be some easterly low cloud eventually by morning not sure.

As expected that was the low temp for last night, cloud came in straight after my last post. Still an ok frost though even now.
