If you are interested in some info I found on Earthquakes and the south east of our continent - check out the following links.
I know there is a lot of info 'out there', but this caught my mind's-eye.

Thanks for the articles DW and as you point out the last link is especially interesting. After a long period of major inactivity maybe SE Australia is on the move.

Fault line goes straight threw clarrie hole dam wall would hate to live below the thing especially becouse its made from earthwall. Needs an upgrade fast nsw government oh thats right use couldnt care less about northen new south wales. Evry time we have heavy rain residents get a txt saying they might have to evacuate. Apparently the dam also couldnt handle 400mm plus in 24hours is a real worry antil the government upgrades the dam wall

Cheers Gabby and LQQKN.
I believe quality info is important to have under one's belt. Not necessarily to become panicked, but aware and realistic about potential hazards, instead of being complacent or too laid back.
That last earthquake was, for me, an unusual feeling. My equalibrium, with the side to side sway, was definitiely challenged. I've experienced a few EQ's in my time, but the movement of this one awakened my awareness (or lessened my complacency) about 'types' of EQ's possible.
I know my NZ friends in Christchurch had and are still nerve-rattled, even shattered, with what they have and are experiencing still. We had a small taste of this recently with our 5.3
Anyway, I am not only a bit of a weather (albeit amateur) geek, but fascinated with Mother Nature too (you could say, a geology/seismology geek smile ) .
Cheers smile

New Zealand has been hit by a few major earthquakes in the last hour.
This link will give an up to the minute update of world wide quakes.

Hope NZ'ers are ok.

Yep it is.
Just had another 20km east of Christchurch - 3.9
My cousin is in Wellington (near to) and apparently felt the first 'lot' as between 5M and 6M - a pretty good old rattle.
Don't know anymore at this stage.

Had a feeling that NZ was going to see some more activity. It had been rather 'quiet' recently.
Was just saying, earlier this week, to my cousin (the one in NZ - a seismologist) that I felt that something was building again. Not that I am a prediction wiz, but just felt it.
The first one in this lot was a 7M.
Hopefully it has released its 'energy' and it'll settle now.

Looking at the clock on my computer, which was 12:06pm, at the time, I thought I felt a very slight sway and what I thought was a minute rumble.
Went to check on my faithful pendulum, and it was quietly moving from side to side by about 5mm both ways.
Did anyone else notice this or am I working too hard and need a coffee? smile

You were working to hard and need a coffee (or a truck/train went past), the biggest quake within a couple hours of that time in the world was a 2.1 in California most were only 1 point something and nothing close ot Oz at all

There was a 'flurry' of sizable quakes along various points of the 'Ring of Fire' within a one hour period, at one point in the last 24-36 hours.
New Zealand's North Island, halfway between Auckland and Wellington has just had another 5.7M, 10kms south of Turangi (in the middle of the island), in the last half hour.
And just another of 5M in the same spot.
And another of 5.3M.
I know NZ is a fairly active seismic zone, compared to Oz. I have friends and family there, so I suppose my interest in these happenings is of a personal nature.

Ok....a little spooky..but the earthquakes (all near M5's) all down the eastern side of the ring of fire today, I had predicted.
Was just saying to one of my sons an hour ago that NZ (near Christchurch) was gonna get an M5 and they just did 25 minutes ago.
Ok...not pleased with myself as people usually are poorly affected by these earthquake occurrences.
Will keep a keen eye on NZ.
Got a feeling that if there is so much M5 occurences along the east side of the ring of fire, that even the east coast (Melb.?) may experience a minor reverberation from this...will see...

Just thought I'd gabble on here, for anyone who is interested smile
A noticable 'trend' in the quakes involving Fiji, Kuril islands (Japan), Japan, Vanuatu, NZ, PNG and so on (all down 'left' of ring of fire), is that they have been around/above M5.
Within the last hour PNG had a couple of near/over M5's, with the last PNG and Fiji quakes being very deep.
The Greece/Turkey region has been constantly 'rumbling' with clusters of smaller quakes. As has the California area - which seems to be constantly releasing its' tension in small bursts. Got an uncomfortable feeling about these two regions.
Alaska is 'clustering' too.
............

More M5+ earthquakes happening again in last 3 or so hours from Kuril Islands - Japan, through to Solomons, Indonesia + PNG.
I am guessing Japan (northish)/Philippines will experience another very soon?
Also feel NZ may get another as well....
