just on the theme of wind speed records etc, I was once told that there was no public database that showed past wind speed records for each day/month/year/ever has any become available now? or does anyone know of where to look it up?
only place I know of for wind records is the monthly summaries..

AZTECH Re Archived wind speed records for any station in the world.....including SA.
I had this site in my bookmarks
Here is a link to OGIMET
http://www.ogimet.com/gsodc.phtml.en
I was able to make a query to their database
It is a global database
Using Adelaide airport station number 94672
( they help you find the station number: click on the station index link)
http://www.ogimet.com/gsodc.phtml.en#indic
I was able to find records for wind and many other obs for any date between 1993 and 2012
Put in a query for 30th of june 1993 and it was able to tell me the max wind gust at Adelaide airport was 57km/hr
amongst other obs like MSLP ,max temp etc
As an aside
I like their global temp extreme records query service
http://www.ogimet.com/ranking.phtml.en

=================

Just did a google which brought up the BOM wind archives

Haven't checked it out but looks like exactly what you want

http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/how/newproducts/IDCdw.shtml

At a glance

Daily mean wind speed, daily maximum wind gust and daily wind run data for stations across Australia, some islands and the Antarctic.
Looks like a good one to book mark

Yes a chilly one tonight I think. 5C inversion above the sfc on the trace I just did but before that may mix it will get quite cool. Could go to 4C here at YPAD, min so far 4.9C. Likely see some shallow fog about.

TS cool

4.1/3.1C now here at YPAD and evidence of shallow fog trying to form but not calling it yet. Bitterly cold I can tell you.

Thanks for searching for and posting that information Crikey - good work! smile

YPAD is code for the Adelaide Airport Puddles. I've forgotten the name of that coding system but it's used in the aviation forecasts TE often posts.

Lovely morning here today though a little overcast but not a breath of wind, it was a bit fresh early on with it going down to 0c overnight. smile

Drizzly day today, had a mix of drizzle and showers at times, very damp, has hardly stopped all day, heavier burst just before.

We were over your way today, Roves. Did a nice drive to Barmera to find the Riverland Exhibition Centre (I have a dog obedience trial there in 2½ weeks) and decided a drive to Renmark would be worth the effort, too.

I was amazed how dry it still is as you head southeast from Burra and all through the Riverland. Glorious day for the drive though. I think hubby, daughter and the pooch enjoyed themselves. smile

I'm sure I saw something similar just to the North-West of me this arvo, just as you mentioned RT. It actually looked a BIT like a thin Black funnel/cloud stretching out in front of it, broken in places -Photo!! NO, not this time, sorry,

John.

Some very interesting cloud dynamics visible out on Lower North East Road yesterday. Big dark blue-grey clouds with what looked like very low in-flow areas of some kind where the bases were so low there was a thick ground fog and stratus. No rain though, but visually quite impressive. Don’t know if anyone else noticed it.

Renmark minus 4.9 min this morning - hope your crop is okay Roves. I don't personally know how vulnerable cereal crops are at the tiny shoot stage so I'm unable to speculate.
Quote Redbucket: "So very glad I'm at home on break in Qld this week. Yunta minimum this morning was -7.5 deg. Brrrrr." blimey - you timed your Queensland break well Redbucket. It doesn't get much colder than that in SA eek

Don't worry US crops can handle the cold just fine the only problem with temps like this morning is that it pulls moisture out of the soil and freezes it so it will dryout the moisture levels in the top layer unlike a dew which comes from a moist atmosphere the other issue with small crops is that it cools the soil down to a point that the crop all but stops growing, not so bad in a no-till scenario because stubble is still there for protection but conventional sown crops will be vulnerable to wind and soil erosion for longer.
