My mother in law on Central Coast is not as happy about the showers.  Are mother in laws ever happy about anything? Very cool and showery here today. Temp only 12.8 atm and we've had a couple of mm's. Homer

Just had bit of a mid winter 'tropical downpour' here with some pea-sized hail thrown in for a few minutes (6pm). No thunder or wind. Heavy rain lasted about 15 mins and about 12mm in gauge over that time. Total 24mm since 9am making total since yesterday 33mm. Red blob on radar moved onshore directly over eastern burbs but seemed to break up inland. Quite a lot of briefly flooded streets in Coogee/Randwick when drains couldn't cope. Radar suggests more showers this evening.

Why has the shower activity increased in Sydney?? Weather patterns have been unchanged the last 24hrs There has been a change in the weather pattern, though I guess you could call it a fairly subtle change. Yesterday the 'flow of showers' was from the SSW, with the majority of showers generally staying offshore (except for the exposed coast near Newcastle). The high south of Adelaide moved a little further east in the past 24 hours, and the low has scooted off to Auckland. Today, the high started to direct showers onto the coast in a southerly flow, which has tended more SSE'ly this evening south of Newcastle. I also believe an upper trough and cold air aloft is enhancing shower activity along much of the NSW coast (both of these things are not marked on synoptic maps). It's a bit simplified, but below is a comparison between 4pm yesterday and 4pm today, using BOM's synoptic maps. The arrows I've drawn on the maps show the general flow of the wind/showers near NSW:  (P.S. Don't judge my work of art, I failed Visual Arts in junior high  )

Just got home from Moore Park - some minor flash flooding around there as usual for any decent falls. Got pretty wet looking for a taxi out there, not much cover to duck between. Most streets' gutters that I saw from the ride home were in full flow. Totals look pretty good, 17mm at Obs Hill so far, seems like no-one saw this one coming.

Homer Thanks for the explanation and it is easy to understand, what I don't understand is these onshore winds are caused by high pressure, and high pressure is supposed to give fine and settled weather if you care to google 'high pressure system' If you look at other weather charts especially in America, you rarely see a high pressure system causing onshore showers.

Gleno i'm no expert but from the glossary:
A large scale atmospheric circulation system in which the winds rotate anti clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere (clockwise in Northern Hemisphere). Anticyclones are areas of high atmospheric pressure and are generally associated with light winds and stable weather conditions. Interchangeable with High pressure system.
From what I can get out of that the winds as they were SE they were creating showers with the offshore moisture.
