The weather variation in the Kingaroy area was crazy thismorining. It got down to 2.2 degrees at the airport thismorning, but I didn't record below 3 degrees at my place. But one of my mates who lives 20 minutes out of town (south-west) recorded -2 with a thick white frost on the ground!!

Bit of instability creeping across tomorrow with a surface & mid level trough & I did notice some reasonable low level shear/helicity & very low LCL's suggested by ACCESS, GFS, etc near the southern inland QLD/NSW border... but to be honest, I think you'd ideally want a lot more "oomph" to the synoptic setup to get a better chance of something noteworthy there.
Looking like if there's going to be any thunderstorm activity at all, it'll probably be near or south of the border & far eastern parts/offshore. Forecast cloud cover through tomorrow morning over a lot of the region as per ACCESS, EC, GFS, etc will also probably keep chances limited as well.

GFS also has a long known tendency to be somewhat aggressive with near-surface dewpoints & resulting CAPE/LI values as well as suffering from convective feedback issues.

Great photo there mate! I climbed Mount Warning a few years ago!
I am not going to get my hopes up for that slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon after what happened last week!

Rain has cleared here now. I recorded 6mm today and 0.5mm yesterday. Is currently very dark to the east, but only a few patches of clouds to the west, so I should wake up to a sunny morning.

Can someone enlighten me why we've had all this unsettled rainy weather in SE QLD lately? Is it one of the below or a combination of, or something else of:
- remnants of the recent La Nina (i.e. it is still lingering around)? - warmer sea temps i.e. Coral Sea therefore causing cloud build up? - or just random variation?
Personally I am hankering for a long settled sunny spell! Just keen to understand why it is so wet

Personally I am hankering for a long settled sunny spell! Just keen to understand why it is so wet There's been extensive upper troughing over eastern Australia so far this winter & lower than normal surface pressures near & off the east coast. I also think that warmer than normal sea surface temps in the northern Coral Sea have played a role (the prevailing ESE'lies blowing across the warmer waters there, moisture being lifted up into the midlevels before some of it curves back down over eastern QLD) as well as warm waters in the central Indian Ocean (the moisture plumes can be seen on satellite water vapour imagery over the last month or two). Analysis of 500hpa heights since the start of winter showing lower than normal heights over eastern Oz caused by upper troughing: Analysis of sea level pressures since the start of winter:

I really appreciate your feedback and this helps explain why this is occurring. The forecast here for the next week looks more settled (aye carumba!)

Looks like and ECL/Tasman low sitting off the coast this friday 20th July..should scrape the coast? Is it close enough for high winds and a lot of rain on the coast?? cold moist air infeeding to the western flank of the ECL and warm moist air from pacific infeeding into eastern flank and a similar scenario further north in the coral sea? I suppose all the action, rain and storms will be at sea?? You should at least cop those high winds ( 50 km/hr)and high ocean swell from those south , south easterlies .Maybe cool as well from southerlies? No thread for this , or is this an insignificant event?
