Yikes, that is a low sunshine total even for Scotland. I wonder how Lerwick (Shetland) is doing?

As for North America, seems like the pattern hasn't changed since winter with Alaska cooler than normal and everywhere else roasting. At least you guys have someplace to go when the NAO is positive, unlike here where in a positive SAM/AAO you can't exactly escape to Antarctica in a hurry.

34.5 hours of sunshine in Lerwick this month up to the 19th.

Lerwick's warmest day this month is 15.4ºC. Not as bad as you might think considering the July average maximum there is only 13.9ºC.

Ten dead as record rain pounds Beijing
AAP
July 22, 2012 4:23PM
THE heaviest rain to hit Beijing in 61 years has left at least 10 people dead over the weekend, while more downpours are forecast for northeast and southwest China, state media say.

Torrential rain pounded the capital all day on Saturday, leading to the evacuation of more than 30,000 people, mostly from Beijing's outlying mountainous districts, the Xinhua news agency said.

A policeman who was electrocuted by a fallen power line during a rescue operation was among the fatalities, while others were killed in traffic accidents and roof collapses, it said.

One woman died after her car was engulfed with water in an underpass on Beijing's central second ring road that was flooded with up to three metres of water.

The death toll could rise with media reports on Sunday saying numerous people, including rescue workers, were missing.

Meanwhile three bodies were recovered on Sunday in Beijing's mountainous Fangshan region where several landslides were reported, China National Radio reported.

It was not immediately clear if the three were already counted in the death toll. The government flood control headquarters told AFP that damage assessments were ongoing.

Up to 46 centimetres of rain fell in Fangshan district, the most rain to hit the city in a 14-hour period since records began in 1951, Xinhua said.

The average rainfall throughout the capital during the period amounted to 16.4 centimetres, the report said, citing the Beijing meteorological bureau.

Numerous roads in the city were submerged under up to a metre of water, while 475 flights were cancelled.

On Sunday, clean-up crews were out repairing damage from the downpour under largely sunny skies, while workers scrambled to drain up to one million cubic metres of water from the sewer system.

Despite the damage, the rain was largely welcomed in drought-prone northern China which has suffered from a lack of rain over the last decade.

More torrential rain was forecast in China's northeast and southwest, after at least 10 other people were killed since Friday.

In the northern province of Shanxi province, four people died and one remained missing after their pick-up truck was swept into a river as they attempted to cross a bridge, Xinhua said.

Landslides in southwestern Sichuan province resulted in six deaths, provincial flood control and drought relief officials told the agency.

Summer has arrived at last with mid-high 20's likely in central and southern England over the next few days. Some lucky locations in the southeast could just creep over 30ºC.

1993 was the last year when 30ºC was not reached anywhere in the UK.

Can think of someone I know who might not be quite so enthusiastic about upcoming hot weather in the UK - but then her main purpose for visiting is to run 26.2 miles (hopefully very quickly) through the streets of London in a couple of weeks' time :-)

Now there's an idea for an endurance event: the "42 in 42"- run a marathon (roughly 42 km) in 42 Celsius. There's already the Badwater marathon, which starts in Death Valley and runs to the base of Mt. Whitney:

http://www.badwater.com/

It has just been completed (July 16-18). There's also a documentary about the race floating around on YouTube, but I won't link to it here.

Looks like Death Valley only had 44c/42c/44c over the dates of the race this year, so not to bad at all, in fact below average for July i think.

Had a max of 53c on the 11th followed by a min of 41c that night!! shocked

54 or maybe 55 at a push is the absolute max for DV, the 56.7C in 1913 is a little suspect I think. Certainly surface temps would get a lot hotter perhaps up to 70C.

Sydney's theoretical max by comparison is around 48C, this has been achieved only once in the 1939 heatwave (at Richmond). Obs Hill has never got above 45C and in an era of declining westerlies I don't think this will be surpassed any time soon.. but Black Saturday has shown what is possible.

I'd really like to know what the Penrith AWS would have recorded on 14/01/39, must have pretty damn close the 50c mark!

Not quite sure it would have in those conditions, there would have been a fierce hot westerly blowing I'd imagine which would tend to make it equally hot everywhere, like on 1/1/06. Penrith is hotter on most days with an easterly wind regime though- heat (and for that matter cold) just sits there without an escape route.

Anyway I'm getting a bit off topic here, so to bring it back- does anyone know of any other extremely hot places in the NH that are a little more obscure? I'm sure there are plenty of places in Africa that nobody has been able to get to with reliable measuring equipment.

ForecaWeather forecast (model??), and other sites for that matter, for the next week going for a string of 50 - 52 degrees in the middle east; Kuwait, Basra, Ahvaz. Some minimums of 40 also for Kuwait.
These places have regularly cracked the 50 mark this month.

These Wetterzentrale maps are quite useful in giving an overall picture of the hot/cold spots around the planet atm- at least between 50N and 50S:

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsavnet.html (Eastern Hemisphere)
http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsavnwt.html (Western Hemisphere)

If you click on '850 Temperatur' on the 1st map, you can see patches of 35C around Kuwait, which roughly corresponds to 50C+ at the surface. Another current hotspot is around Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle, indeed, Oklahoma City is going for several days over 40C according to Google.

Folks:

My area of the US continues to be in the grips of a Very HOT & DRY weather pattern.
Yesterday (July 30th), the temperature soared to 111F/43.8C at Adams Field (Airport) in Little Rock (this is their 3rd-highest temperature ever, surpassed only by Maximums of 114F/45.5C on August 3rd, 2011 & 112F/44.4C on July 31st, 1986). The town of Searcy (White County) also topped out at 111F/43.8C.
We here in Mena topped out at a "cooler" but still toasty 101F/38.3C.

Been a toasty one in the States for sure. I know that Indianapolis ended the month 6c above the average of 29c, and i'd say most of that region would have seen similar anomalies. I think Chicago averaged 33c, 4c above average which shows how dominant the heat has been.

A brief scan of some Persian Gulf sites shows lots days over 50 in the last 4 weeks. Many days with dew points in the low thirties. Even a minimum above 40. One Kuwait site had a temp range of 40 - 50 this week.
They're in a league above.

53.6 was observed at a site in Kuwait on Tuesday, potentially an Asian record if confirmed. Also a possible state record yesterday with a report of 49.4 in Oklahoma, although that one looks a bit dodgy to me given other temperatures in the region.
