It looks to be quite a warm week with a good low pressure trough, associated high winds and cold air initially! Should see some storms Wednesday/Thursday then moving eastwards.

No mention of storms in BOM's Sydney forecast yet Dave No 81.
Do you expect that to change?

looking at the models i was expecting to see storms pop up in todays forecast. The forecast if for 28c up this way on thursday so the BOM must be expecting some clear sky.

I am expecting storms further inland (just west of, or on the ranges) in NSW for Thursday. Actually looks like a decent severe storm setup provided enough low-level moisture makes its way into NSW (and elevated showers and storms/cloud cover doesn't hinder later development). I'm always a fan of forecast soundings so here's one for 1 pm Thursday at Young-

http://soundings.bsch.au.com/skew-t.html...000&chart_mode=

Certainly has my interest - nice low CAPE/strong shear example! If it were the weekend, I would be making plans to head to the NW or SW slopes and plains. Even better CAPE forecast for that area but shear is not as strong as in the forecast sounding above (but still excellent).

850 temps are off the charts for August on Thursday, 15C near Newcastle. Lets hope there are some storms to mitigate this heat. 30C still possible as far south as Sydney. What's odd is that there is no blocking involved, just a huge tongue of hot air from the inland. Normally you need a huge upper high with several days of mid-high 20s to get near 30C in August down here.

PS I did say that 30C in August was possible this year... looks like I might be right, unfortunately.

Looking at the high temps forecast here for wed and thurs, plus possible rain, surely that's instability for storms?! I've been eyeing that forecast with hope for the past few days.

I would agree with Michael.. quite a decent setup especially for August!! I think GFS is overdoing the moisture levels on the NWSP at least with those crazy low LFTX values as it normally does in spring. I also think cloud may just ruin the storm chances in Sydney on Thursday (surprise surprise). The linear shear values are nuts.. 70-75 knots at 700mb in places, storms will be over in a few seconds! Strong winds certainly a chance.

Sydney won't get storms either way: either it will be a dry hot NW'ly around 30C or a cloudy 25C. With the propensity for fine weather lately, I'm backing the sun.Inland is a different story, things are always a little more dynamic out there. The esteemed knights of the Sydney Storm Shield are mounting their steeds and preparing for battle, methinks.

I wouldn't mind betting you'll notch up your first 20C of the season at Canberra Airport (maybe not on the anthill).Likely the first 25C here tomorrow (definitely Thursday)- they are the clear demarcations of spring for mine.

Bathurst should get to 20C also provided the cloud stays away. Time to dust off the A/C DaveM poke

We pay for it on Friday, 12C, but I don't care! Tomorrow should be really interesting. I'll get pretty excited if those big fat bulging clouds start to gather in the afternoon.

I hurled a bit of grass seed around this evening in preparation.

Maybe the AC DC SB - Spring is definitely hammering towards us now. At least we keep cool nights for a few months yet so that's a saver. smile

We will soon have a ludicrous situation where we turn on the heaters in the morning at work but turn on the AC later in the arvo - this building's temps swing heavily - needs better insulation. smile

I opened up heaps of windows at home this morning - give the place a good airing during the day.

Will be interesting to see whether we get a storm or at least see one about later. NW winds will feel warm for sure.

The obs say Canberra got minus 3 last night. I bet I didn't! It was 8.something this morning just after sunrise, gorgeous. Lots of mare's tails in the sky, and a grubby haze along the western horizon. It's still there.

Won't see the warm temps or storms here today. A cool and overcast day currently 12 deg. With the cloud cover, will probably only rise a few more deg. Even a touch of frost on the car this morning.
Duane.

We're almost there, 18.1c currently. Getting a bit hazy but it's still very bright. And watch out for sheep graziers, there's an alert. Forecast for tomorrow has been strengthened to RAIN.

The airport has been to just over 19, the official temp might hit 20 or just miss. My guess of Sept 5 for first 20 might be in jeopardy today/tomorrow.

Given our wether of late today feels quite warm indeed. It's windy and warm.

Some showers that are barely more than virga just to my west. Definitely not a winter sky today.

Damn - official max today 20, about 3 weeks early for my guess in another thread.

Yo ho ho ho bigfun - where the hell did that name come from SB? smile

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum is a better idea. smile

We have some more stormy looking stuff to our west and it's relatively dull light atm. Might get a light shower but then again maybe not.
