For anyone who plays around with GoPro cameras I can definately recommend the new GoPro App as a handy tool for use with any of the Wi-Fi enabled devices. Installed on any smart phone or tablet it enables full menu functionality and remote image viewing at a range of well over 200 metres on one or multiple cameras.

For those with the hero 2 camera the Wi-Fi backback is obviously required but it comes built in to the hero 3 camera. Having played around with it a bit today I must say I'm impressed! Tested it on two cameras and worked out that the can be activated either simultaneously or independantly. Simultaneous activation is definately handy when it comes to editing on a timeline. For instance a camera mounted externally on my vehicle can be viewed and started/stopped with a simple tap on the phone screen as well as having the ability to change any or all settings without touching the camera. Very cool!

Below is a bit of a Youtube tutorial on the product. Be interested to hear from others who have played with the App.

Think I might pick up the hero3 soon. Been having heaps of fun with my gopro. I love the high speed setting (even though it's somewhat low res.)

Fun to attach to bikes, skateboards, dogs, myself, RC planes etc. (along with lightning, weather stuff) They seem to be able to put up with lots of abuse, and you get a fair bit for what you pay for IMO. The timelapse function is good...great to leave it outside and not have to worry about rain (with the waterproof case)

The hero2 should be able to be picked up cheap now that the 3 is out. That built in wifi + 240fps/120fps 720p mode has my mouth watering though. Being able to control multiple cameras with the app is great.

My Brother and Dad will be debuting a GoPro 2 using the WiFi backpack and the App for Android this weekend all going well (looks unlikely though). Initial tests have left my brother very impressed, he was using the app on his Samsung Galaxy tab. I'll be more than happy to let you know how it all goes. BTW the GoPro 2 is going in a speedway car... Unsure of class, but most likely a sprintcar.

The built in wifi in the GoPro 3 is definitely interesting! Could definitely be some webcam potential with them - power would be the first hurdle but given it's battery powered it would (hopefully) be as easy as wiring up a permanent AC-DC power supply to the battery terminals. Given there's no mechanical shutter in them you could hammer them all day long at 5-10 second frequency - the resulting time lapse would be nice and smooth and you could just upload an image every minute or two for a live web feed. The base model looks reasonably affordable (US$200 on the gopro.com site, not sure what they'd go for locally) ... I'm toying with the idea of setting one up in the Weathercam Network as a trial.

I like the way you think Ben smile . Reminds me to donate something to BSCH. (edit - hrm I remember a donate link but can't find it)

Here's a couple bolts I got @ 120fps. That rolling shutter is annoying, but I think part of it was me shaking in fear from all the close strikes.

This one about 1 min in (the quality is all messed up in this one...my fault though) -

If you need to know anything about the hero2 let me know. I love the time-lapse functions. It's got a nice big FOV but a slight fisheye effect - you can narrow the FOV in settings but haven't tried this out yet.

That fisheye affect is minimized substantially in the Hero 3, as is low light functionallity.

Changing the FOV using the App is very easy and can be changed on the run remotely. Probably the best feature of the App really, no more fiddling around with the cameras menu.

Hi Guys, did you see the segment on Sixty Minutes on Sunday night about GoPro Camera's. And the guy who created them... it was a good segment and the footage shared was pretty cool.

I would love one... here is the link Sixty Minutes Segment

Probably no need to donate at the moment Chris, thanks for thinking of us though!

Thanks for those video links - your timing is perfect as I was wondering what lightning would be like in the 120fps mode. Your right about that rolling shutter, it does take the edge off the video. It does extremely well when there's plenty of light (ie the lightning strikes) but the rolling shutter becomes visible in low light after the lightning fades. It looks like the frame rate drops right off to a fraction of that 120fps. With that in mind I'm wondering if you took the same footage with some ambient light in the foreground, say city lights, if that rolling shutter may not be as visible? With a constant light source to keep the frame rate up. Just a thought!

Thanks for the tips! Will definetly give that a go next time.

Here's a demo timelapse -

Looks a bit blurry but that's my processing issues or youtube. Looks better on vimeo - https://vimeo.com/53662390

What program did you use to edit your footage, was it just the go pro studio? Or some other program?
Reason I ask is I get terrible noise in my footage in low light and night time.

Go pros actually have a timelapse setting. set it up, press the button and it will take pics every half second or so.

Just downloaded the app. Very handy but I have to admit I am just a little disappointed it won't connect underwater(even though I figured that would be the case)

Got a couple of the new GoPro 4 Blacks to have a play with over the past few days and I have to say they are a serious leap forward from the 3 plus. Apart from the obvious advances in frame rate capabilities at high resolution enabling silky smooth slow motion editing, the long exposure time-lapse ability has to be seen to be believed. Was expecting noise to become a big issue given the tiny sensor size but even in the absence of any real ambient light they were able to produce some very nice images completely devoid of digital noise whatsoever, even at the higher ISO settings.

I can envisage some very nice stormscape timelapses showing up around the place in the coming months as people embrace the ease of compiling wide FOV sequences without the usual exposure variances that make it a bit of a chore sometimes with DSLR's.

Nice. Was having a look at the specs yesterday. Definitely looks the goods. Mind you it is certainly reflected in the price.

I'd like to grab a couple of go pros, at least get one Hero 4 black, to put on the car for some chases.... My mate has a Hero 3 black and it was amazing. I'd love a good timelapse camera. Its something my 60D just doesn't do on its own

Sorry for the late reply. I use Sony Vegas for editing, not sure if it has better features just used to it.

Yeah the noise can be pretty bad. There's various plugins you can get to reduce it. Also might be worth trying putting the GoPro in Protune mode - a bit like RAW mode on DSLR's, although it doesn't get rid of internal processing completely.

Got a Black 4 gopro recently and it's pretty great. Filmed a storm at highspeed 1080p last week and I'll be uploading that video soon, looks amazing.

Only wish they had upped the FPS for 720p - would be awesome to have it at 240fps.

For anyone buying a GoPro I'd recommend a couple spare batteries. Haven't tested the new one but only got about 2 hours with the Hero 2 while timelapsing.

At least take some peace of mind that there's lots of people in the same boat. I do hate when that happens though. Doubt it'll be that cheap again, pretty sure eBay covers the cost of the 20% off.
