BoM list 40.9 as the maximum so far at Hobart at 1:41pm.
That would be an all time record for the site, and a 118 year record at that!

The minimum in Hobart has been recorded as 23.4C, rather than 25.7C, due to it being the minimum temp between 9am yesterday and 9am today (between 9am and 10am yesterday it was around 23-24 degrees). So it's the warmest January night on record, but not the warmest night on record for any month.
The 'Low Temp' on the Observations page (showing 25.7C) is the minimum temp between 6pm yesterday and 9am today, but it is not the official minimum. As the Bureau also states: "Note: Minimum temperatures in the Bureau's climate records are measured from 9 am to 9 am and may differ from the values shown in the table."

Well I thought may hit over 40.8 today and it did. eek
What is the chance of seeing 45 or so in February when we normally get the hottest spells . Pretty good chance I think.

Why so much cooler in Penguin ? Right near the sea ? Hobart isn't ?

Also what about Molesworth about 41 deg ?

Finally this may sound dumb but if Australia being a continent and Tasmania being on a separate bit of landmass surrounded by water , how does the hot desert air from Central Australia travel to Tasmania, does it cross the ocean ? That would make it humid ? confused

Hobart and Penguin are on the water - by the time it crosses bass straight the air has been moderated by the ocean and the air less well mixed. The air mixes as it rises over the central plateau and you get much hotter conditions through the Derwent Valley. North West Coast around Penguin is more humid.

Molesworth is in the derwent valley and would be close to Hobart's temp.

Does that mean the thermometer is on fire?
You get the feeling that temp may be a little innacurate don't you:)

Actually looking at the BoM obs it was 54.9deg and had a jump of 16.5deg in the space of half an hour to get to it.

I wonder what will happen to the reading of the temp then. It seems to be too far out to be accepted

No, not accurate. The original max of 41.3 might be accepted. Up to the BOM

Bushfires everywhere. Dunalley, Fawcett and Bicheno and other southern east coast towns are under serious threat. Evacuations everywhere. 3500 customers without power with many road closures. All peninsular residents been told to go to Nubeena NOW. All tourist that were at Port Arthur are being ferried out.
