The Putty fire is flaring up again, quite visible on radar and visible shows smoke all the way to coast near Newcastle.

I suspect there is another 10-15 knots of increase left in the W/NW wind out there too, judging from Nullo Mountain compared to points further south.

Very hot and gusty westerly winds here. 38.9 degrees was the peak according to my PWS. If it doesn't cool down it's going to be an uncomfortable night.

It's been mostly light winds here. A gusty SW'er blew through here about 20 minute ago but that's gone now, leaving things as they were - hot and still with mostly light winds of indeterminate direction.

Penrith and Richmond reached 40.6 and 40.0 respectively, lots of places around Sydney reached 38, including the Airport. OH has been hovering between 29-31 since late morning in a seabreeze.

Sea temps off Sydney have warmed up, MHL says 24.65.

another fire at Kitchener near Cessnock now also apparently.

I just had an uh oh moment on latest GFS....... our coastal shower burst has all but been deleted, with much less rain following up and more strong ridging. Please be a blip. cant handle more of these carrots.

The southerly is through Narooma. It's a strong one too.
Gabo Island had a gust of 104 km/h after the winds swung from the NE to the SW.
BOM going for gusts up to 60 km/h with the change for the metro, so more than likely, there'll be some that are stronger than that.
I'm following the progress here.

If anyone happens to click on the link, scroll across and check out TC Gita in the south Pacific. It's quite a best

Just checked the new forecast. There's a "cold" spell coming up in Sydney early next week, with 3 consecutive days 26 or under and 11-31mm of rain. In fact, something I don't recall seeing in the charts before, Gita wanders down into the Central Tasman at what looks like near full strength, around the latitude of Sydney at 11:00 Monday, with long fetch SE'ers on the coast. Too far away for much rain, but there'll be some big waves on the coast

---

It was 38 on the car thermometer driving home just now.

Yes big swell on way Steve. Maybe like those generated by cyclone Colin in 1976. As a surfie in those days, they were the biggest goddam waves i had ever seen outside of a magazine or surf movie.

Thabks Teddy. Heading to Port Villa and Mystery Island, Vanuatu. Mare and Noumea in New Caledonia. I've been to all of them except Port Villa, except last time was with the family and two small children so I imagine this time will allow me some more R&R unless GIta has something to say about that poke

Second time I've gone for a cruise and second time I've been offered a job just before I go. This time one I haven't applied for it but by another manager close to my current team. Declined it twice today but he was persistent and got the opportunity to try it out for 3-6 months. I accepted 3 months as it's risk free.

Wow Knot, didn't realise Vita's sphere of influence was so large. Impressive.

Can't say I'm all too surprised about latest GFS. Here's hoping for some wet stuff, I'll be keeping an eye on any good news you guys have re. Rain. smile

Yes the sat image shows the smoke reaching to newcastle and far into the tasman sea. Speaking of the satellite, it shows our savior (the southerly) charging up the coast quite clearly.

I just got off the explorer of the seas and we were supposed to go to Mystery island but diverted to Luganville due to possible cyclone Fehi developing.Ended up only having 2 to 3 metre swells with very nice weather apart from a thunderstorm in Luganville.Anyway here,s hoping you guys get some good falls especially around the Hunter

For posterity, here are the Putty Fire and the approaching Southerly (roll cloud?) a little while ago:

That's one big fire.

----

The Westerlies have now reached the coast South of Sydney, with the temperature surging to 36-37 at places like Kiama and Bellambi. It'll probably happen further North as the change approaches. The flags on the Harbour Bridge are hanging limp.

EDIT: I see the Airport made a late surge to 40.

EDIT2: emergency warning for Putty fire: RFS Putty Fire . RFS gives the fire size as 2414 Ha (24 sq km).

Sounds like your arm was twisted, Yes we have been lucky and been to all those ports, most recently Dec 2017 on the Golden Princess. We did the mud buggys at Port Vila and I was grinning from ear to ear & covered in mud (was expensive mud as Princess excursions are not cheap)
STC Gita is really packing a punch & if it continues it's westerly course you may be in trouble with missing some stuff. I feel sorry if you are a New Zealander at the moment because guess where they are predicting a weakened cyclone will strike, NZ but lets hope it hits cooler waters and runs out of puff, I heard that the SST's were still around 29C which combined with the atmospheric conditions are conducive for the cyclone to maintain it's ferocity.
I have been through several TC's in Port Hedland and they are exciting and scary at the same time.

Far too windy today a lot of debris on the roads not to mention a few grass fires which were quickly brought under control.

Cheers Teddy

BTW I'm a seasoned cruiser now love being out on the ocean & being looked after.

Here's some information on the BOM site about tropical cyclone impacts in NSW. I believe that full blown cyclones have only affected the coast North of Coffs Harbour, but cyclones have been known to come into NSW through the 'back door', overland from the Gulf of Carpentaria, to cause high winds and flooding:

BOM NSW Cyclones

If a cyclone gets South of about Brisbane, it is normally steered to the East or sometimes SE towards NZ.

------

The Westerly looks about to win at OH, so today's max there will probably be shortly.

The Southerly passed through Ulladulla just after 5:30, dropping the temp from 35 to 22 in half an hour.
