Rain starting to get heavy-ish now, I did not expect another NW type rain event today. I assumed the possibility of a shower was going to follow on from yesterday's S/SWly airstream.

In a way I find it enjoyable when I've been too busy to look at the weather in detail so things like this become a surprise.

...and it's damn freezing!

Good to see the overnight model runs have kept/slightly improved this weekends cold outbreak, slamming a massive slab of cold antarctic air right across the SE. And it will be chaseable for those with a free weekend.

Not as cold as Western Sydney with Camden still on 8C and Penrith 9C.

Kino I'll be either chasing or camping up at Barrington Tops

Wow!
BOM going all in for Thredbo TS in this afternoon's forecast. Over 130 mm's forecast in the next 7 day - almost all falling at below zero temps.
Even Orange now has snow in the forecast for both Saturday and Sunday and above 800 metres for Bathurst.
It's gonna be cold!!!

Forecast max of 15 & 14 here for the weekend - brrrrrrrrrrrr!

Sure looking to be one of the stronger changes weve seen for a while. Pity its a classic westerly so the coast wont see any rain at this stage unless those winds turn more southerly.

Just checked the MSLP out - one model has the southerlies extending from 50s! Frigid.

So how are things tracking 12 days into Winter temp wise? It has felt cold, but are we below average?

This weekend does look Juicy. Just need this mark 2 in Mid July for a snow dump here! Will probably need the 534 thickness over us or better for that.

Latest GFS has the winds turning onshore for another spray here at the end of the cold outbreak too. Liking that bit. Hope it holds. Maybe the wish of cold and snowy with ECLS and rain is possible after all....

Not too sure Eddy and we may not even go up if there's no chance of snow as we get closer to the date. Winds keep staying SWly in latest models instead of turning southerly so no precip in the latest runs.

I haven't done one of these for a while. This chart follows Sydney's descent into Winter 2018, tracking daily temperature averages at Bankstown, about 20 km SW of Sydney, from high Summer to mid June. The red line is a 7 day moving average.

A few points to note:

1. Parramatta forecast temps have been used for June 13-19.
2. It was a long hot Summer. The chart doesn't include December, but it was almost as hot as January. Summer lasted until mid April.
3. There's no obvious start to Winter. We look to be still on the way down.
4. The cyclic nature of Summer conditions this year and the more steady conditions outside Summer.
5. A bit of a 'mini ice age' in early February. We seem to get one of these each Summer, although this year's was only a little below average.
6. I chose Bankstown rather than Sydney OH because the peculiarities of the latter site - its exposure to marginal sea breezes, its location on top of a local hill and heat island effects - can mask seasonal changes. OH is just too mild to reflect what most Sydneysiders experience.

Nice work Steve777

A fairly chilly start to the day here, all thanks to this high cloud about.

Still waiting to hear the exact details, but it's expected to be announced in Dubbo today, along with other drought relief packages, that $25 million is to be put towards building new doppler radars in NSW. Not sure if this will mean new radars in new locations or upgrading existing radars. Doesn't seem like a lot of $ to me, but time will tell I guess

Hey Alby it seems in WA $23 million was enough to establish 3 high resolution doppler radars, so it seems like something we can look forward to.

We really need radars in the West of the State. Maybe one near Orange, another at Tamworth and one in the far West (Cobar?). Another the Riverina - Griffith?.

Maybe one between Newcastle and Grafton as well (Port Macquarie?).

Filtered sunshine through thin high cloud here.

I'd guess - Dubbo (as the announcement is there); Grafton upgraded to doppler and maybe Broken Hill?

Edit: media suggests central and far west; so I'm not far off 2 of my guesses; the 3rd shall be interesting - would say upgrade Mildura but that's in Vic and this is a NSW Budget thing.

A bit more on what we will likely see - will be great for watching the systems move across inland NSW - there are some cracking storms out there that we just don't get to see: "The Central West region supports substantial cropping enterprises however the nearest radars are in Moree and Wagga Wagga. Given that the effective range of radar is approximately 200km, the Central West is hampered with forecasting that is severely limited, inaccurate, or non-existent.
This situation is exacerbated in the Western Division where moderate changes in climactic conditions can have an exponential impact resulting in rapid change and safety challenges. In contrast to New South Wales, the wheatbelt of Western Australia has continuous radar coverage from Perth to Kalgoorlie. The radar stations will cover a gap in existing coverage that extends over large sections of highly productive cropping land in the Central and North West of the state. "

Fingers crossed for one in the central west and some upgrades. I'm in Dubbo for a waternsw corporate roadshow and we've just been dragged away from our work to meet the minister. Hopefully some light will be shed
