At least for all you rural people this cool and cloudy start to October has not been all bad, in terms of evaporation rates. Hopefully this summer conjures up some magic to help our state out, everyone needs some very heavy rainfall events. Because i noticed with all this rain over the Sydney Basin Warragamba dam is still falling (-0.3% over the past week).

The Warragamba catchment is now getting well primed (especially in the northern sections around Lithgow/Katoomba) for any decent falls to start to run off into the storage. What we need now is for some falls in the catchment of around 50-100mm or more, before the primed soils start to dry out again as summer approaches.

Maybe they need to turn on the desal' plant asap, maybe that will trigger a lot of rain.

Actually the desalination plant will not be activated for sometime yet this was due to the Kurnell Tornado causing extensive damage to the plant. And classic bureaucracy meant that they didn't get to fixing it so the plant won't be fully operational until August next year. But in weather timescales it's a long time.

These annoying showers just keep on coming, and coming, and coming.
Just 14 degrees here atm. This much cool in October for such a prolonged period of time I cannot remember.

Well much to my surprise it was mostly sunny for a lot of the afternoon. I was outdoors at around 1pm and it was a beautiful day with a cool breeze. The cloud has returned now.

Reminds me a bit of Oct 2004, although that prolonged cold/wet spell was preceded by a record 38C day. This is one of the coolest spells I can remember for spring, the showers like a neverending convoy. With the ECL(?) now forming off SE QLD, it could get even longer.

I've had steady drizzle/showers here for the past hour. It's just become a bit heavier.
I'd like to think that no one is complaining about this wet spell.
It's been months and months since we've had it like this. It really wasn't that long ago that all of us were desperate for some rain.
It's been going for 8 days here now and I'm loving it, even though it has been very disruptive to work and has cost me money this week. I'm just thankful I'm not a farmer and have had to put up with the last 18 months/2 years.
We all always knew that at some stage, the prolonged dry spell would come to an end with a bang, and for some of us it has. It has been constant and moderate, and is replenishing deep soil moisture for those of us who have had it. Just perfect.

Unfortunately, for some of those that have needed it more than us city folk, it hasn't come to fruition. These are the people whose luck I hope changes. But while ever I'm getting the rain, and those that really need it for their livelihood don't, I won't complain.

And, Summer will eventually come, along with the heat. It's Australia.

Bring on the heat, but as long as we get some heavy falls of rain as well not all heat, that is what has done all the damage as far as dryness up here last summer severe heat and no rain.

This rain is nothing short of a miracle for most, considering 100% of NSW and most of QLD is in drought. Certainly no complaints here, as I know this rain will do little if there's no follow up.

Interesting set-up for the next few days, don't often see a front from the west running into an ECL/deep NE'er. The two could combine to create more decent falls.

I think the switch to the wet couldn't have come at a better time, during the driest time of year heading into the warmer months. The troughy pattern appears to stay as far as the models can see, with highs continually anchoring themselves in the bight.

Up to 16mm now at Mt Boyce which is way more than anywhere else in the area. It's just been constant drizzle up there for over 24 hours now, quite amazing actually. Probably happens up in the mountains fairly regularly but I have never looked at how long rain has fell consistently there.

If we get rain here today, which is likely, it'll be the first Oct since 2005 to record 10 straight rain days in a row. If the forecast rain comes off, which looking at models is sure possible, it'll be the longest period of days with rainfall recorded for here (Bellambi) since records began (granted the station is only 22 years of age, but still impressive).

For Albion Park it's already the longest spell since March 2017 and longest on record for Oct (again, station is only 20-odd years old) and Kiama is also similar (2009 is the last Oct it recorded 9+ days rain in a row).

It rained and we have 2mm, with every single day in the outlook period forecast with more rain. Loving it. Hopefully it pushes over places that need it - like us where we are still 500mm behind average despite the good few weeks.

Yeah almost always happens where Mt. Boyce gets continual rain/showers/drizzle in a long easterly fetch as the air lifts up the mountains. We are getting shower #29563 for the event here.

Will be lots of happy faces up in SE QLD. Could see up to 100mm by morning in plenty of areas. Townsville getting hail. Inland SA going off lightning-wise and WA yet another rain bearing system. It's all happening

The WA system will be our next event, surviving all the way to the east coast to interact with our ECL/trough. Not often you see that happening, the high in the tasman usually acts as a block and sends the system S of the bight, not this time though. It's almost as though the high is slipping it's hand underneath and holding it up (in the forecast charts).

The WA system does looks pretty nice indeed, hopefully it will benefit those inland areas that need it.

Beautiful and sunny this morning, the only clouds are high cloud. But with the flick of a switch the low cloud and showers will likely make a return at some point, probably the arvo. Plenty of sunshine mixed with the rain is fine by me, makes it interesting to have heavy showers and then sunshine.

Probably not since Nov 1998, when a Low camped in the Tasman directed a SSE airflow for an entire month, snuffing out 27 out of 30 days to below the average max for November, and not one day reached 30C in OH.
But interesting how cold spells can occur after early season warm weather as well. (for those with long memories, the coldest November max on record in mid November 1988 occurred after a 39C day early in the month, and a very hot October)
This Oct reminds me somewhat of 2016, just relentlessly low level below average temps and light rain, but looks better for next week.

Storm bird (well for the Illawarra more the rain bird) going off again this morning, assume there's more rain tonight. Certainly forecast to be. Should be heavier falls overnight I'm guessing as the stream is more easterly and warmer than the frigid Se'erly stream of the last few days. At least with the higher DP's it doesn't feel as cold.

Just checked the forecast. Most of Sydney's rain forecast today has been cancelled. Was 10-20 mm, now 1 to 4 mm.

That being said, a moderately heavy shower just started as I was typing. Radar shows showers about, few than yesterday, now coming from the NE.
