yeah, the influx of humid air mitigates the pleasantness of the easterly, unless it's a ripping icy one! This one's very soft, mine's a S/SE now, but very gentle, 25.4c outside now. bah. I don't think it's going to do much of usefulness at all tonight.

We got down to about 17 last night and strangely it hit about 17 around 1 am but bounced up and down till dawn. It feels like a hot one coming that's for sure. Air has that look and feel already.

Expect no less than 39 for Bathurst today. Last night and this morning was the first time this summer it was too hot for me, that is an indication of just how hot the airmass above is. Could even nudge the record again.

Anyone able to explain the big black dot on CAPE forecast for Tuesday? Seems to move up the coast with the area of convection... guessing it's a blip in the model but looks quite odd.

On another note, seems to be high CAPE/LI across various areas of NSW throughout the next week, pretty much every day. With any luck we'll get some moisture down here with it.

That would just be an error, the models can get very funky looking at times.

My garden is showing real signs of stress after yesterdays record breaking heat, I got to 46.7c at home, hottest temp I have ever recorded here.

The palm trees are all drooping their branches down and many succulents have been scorched.

It's sad isn't it Jon- to think, this time last year everything was a lake. But I knew better, I suspected we'd be lurching back to the dry sooner rather than later so I loved last year's cool and wet summer.

Rain on the Alice Springs radar this morning and Cairns is looking better- hopefully in about a month's time (sooner if we're lucky) we'll start to see some worthwhile systems. This week already looks a bit better, troughy with the chance of showers and storms almost every day. Of course being storms it won't be the soaking, consistent rain that we need but it's a start.

What do people think of the chanced of storms next Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday ?

Moday looks to have pretty decent shear and then it progresivly looks to get worse as the week goes on and then picks up heaps on Friday/Saturday. Next Saturday looks very interesting on the current models with a change moving up the coast, the timing of the change could be the difference between great storms and nothing. Will be interesting to see if the models hold out.

BTW are we meant to be talking about that in the Showers thread or start a new one for storms ?

I can't help with the prognosis for storms. but the models on this site for the coming week look wetter than they ha e for a while, with persistent Easterlies and troughs on the mid North coast, a bit like last Summer. I think the weather has turned a corner, rather like it did after the hot dry December of 2005
(culminating with 44 degrees at Observatory Hill on 1/1/2006) gave way to a mild, cloudy January.

After a warmish, fairly cloudy morning and early afternoon, solid mid level cloud closed in here on the Central Coast, with persistent light rain since mid afternoon. For a while it was enough to be annoying but not enough to do much good. It has picked up a bit in the last hour or so.

Enjoying the cool, although it got to 26c and very humid today, bit sweaty for mucking around with irrigation. very low misty cloud all day, the ranges to my east were shrouded all day but didn't get a drop of precip. 14c now, very civilised. Liking the moisture in the forecast for all next week, desperately needed. I think yesterday might have done for the hydrangea. Gave it a good soak with the hose today and... nothing happened. Not a good sign. always knew a daphne and a hydrangea up here were a gamble. Seems that was correct after all.

Was digging channels for the irrigation pipe and it is just dry dry dry in that soil, there is nothing to stick the soil together.

Southerly Buster you did well then. Constantly amazed at my own ability to be deluded into thinking the weather will find some medium/average/moderate path between extremes.

Jon, I try gardening too. Last year my dry climate perennials carked it due to humidity. This year I've been wasting days with supplementary watering for the replacement subtropical plants. what do you do? But succulents getting scorched? That's a new one to me. I'm beginning to think you've got to be slightly nuts to garden in this place.

Mizzle fest here atm, almost light rain you could call it. Can only just see the headland now. Hope it does not stop the cricket.

Yep never fails- hold a cricket match and it will rain- but I'm not complaining really, could do with a solid night of mizzle.

Totally clear here when play stopped, but now I have the mizzle, so it must be heading down the coast despite the wind still being SE'ly.

Any idea if the mizzle will last long at SCG? Debating whether to go home

According to Cricinfo, covers are off now but drizzle almost light rain continuing here. But I think it may be clearing from the north. Radar doesn't offer any help as it's passing under the beam!

Mizzle is hard to work out, everyone checking BOM radar at the ground but shows virtually nothing. Interesting what causes drizzle, is it just small rain drops formed the same way normal rain does?
