The '''s are a bad habit of mine - must refrain grin
Don't know what happened with the USGS yesterday, but all looks good now. Some of my US friends are still saying that some of the tremors they are experiencing aren't coming up on the feeds though.
Cheers, Duck smile

The previous post is misleading - this is to correct it

The correct text issued by the PWTC includes this:

A TSUNAMI WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR

SOLOMON ISLANDS / VANUATU / NAURU / PAPUA NEW GUINEA / TUVALU /
NEW CALEDONIA / KOSRAE / FIJI / KIRIBATI / WALLIS AND FUTUNA

A TSUNAMI WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR

MARSHALL ISLANDS / HOWLAND AND BAKER / POHNPEI / TOKELAU /
SAMOA / KERMADEC ISLANDS / NEW ZEALAND / AMERICAN SAMOA /
TONGA / AUSTRALIA / NIUE / COOK ISLANDS / INDONESIA /
WAKE ISLAND / CHUUK / JARVIS ISLAND / GUAM / NORTHERN MARIANAS /
PALMYRA ISLAND / YAP / JOHNSTON ISLAND / MINAMITORISHIMA /
BELAU

This is to *emphasize* that a tsunami warning has NOT been issued for Australia

DECISIONS REGARDING THE OFFICIAL STATE OF ALERT IN THEIR AREA AND
ANY ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN RESPONSE.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0112Z 06 FEB 2013
COORDINATES - 10.9 SOUTH 165.1 EAST
DEPTH - 33 KM
LOCATION - SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS
MAGNITUDE - 8.0

MEASUREMENTS OR REPORTS OF TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY

GAUGE LOCATION LAT LON TIME AMPL PER
------------------- ----- ------ ----- --------------- -----
DART 52406 5.3S 165.1E 0206Z 0.04M / 0.1FT 10MIN
DART 55012 15.8S 158.5E 0237Z 0.17M / 0.6FT 06MIN
LATA WHARF SB 10.7S 165.8E 0129Z 0.91M / 3.0FT 18MIN

LAT - LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
LON - LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME - TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY
ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL
MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND
COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE
EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

ANY ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN RESPONSE.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0112Z 06 FEB 2013
COORDINATES - 10.9 SOUTH 165.1 EAST
DEPTH - 33 KM
LOCATION - SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS
MAGNITUDE - 8.0

MEASUREMENTS OR REPORTS OF TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY

GAUGE LOCATION LAT LON TIME AMPL PER
------------------- ----- ------ ----- --------------- -----
LUGANVILLE VU 15.5S 167.2E 0243Z 0.11M / 0.4FT 18MIN
DART 52406 5.3S 165.1E 0206Z 0.04M / 0.1FT 10MIN

Only just got in from driving all over the place since 9am...just the thing to be doing on a stinking hot day! Only just learning of the situation with Santa Cruz Islands.
Santa Cruz's situation doesn't surprise me, most unfortunately. I had a horrible feeling that the next immediate movement in this area was going to be very substantial.
I hope to goodness the surrounding island populations are OK.
Off to read more about this now....

Absolutely agree with you ... it would be great if WZ somehow stored the images associated with events (like radar / soundings etc) as well.

But it may be smart to create an event specific (technical?) thread if the event is significant, this thread is pretty much well for general discussion and I'm sure the intent is not to clog it up with dozens of pages on one single event (if it is significant).

This is one of the better (info wise) articles, from the Santa Cruz Sentinel (United States), which I have been able to find so far.
There have been some lives lost and communities, some badly, affected by tsunami waves.
The EQ's are continuing and may not let up for some time. The M8 quake earlier, resonated almost world wide. Seismographs in many countries globally recorded some substantial movements on their equipment.
If I find any other quality info, I'll jot it here.

The quakes in and near Santa Cruz Islands are fluctuating in size and I am feeling that another large quake may occur again. This area is appearing to be very unstable and unpredictable.
I am wondering what it is doing to the sea floor. I read somewhere that a previous large quake (years ago) raised a reef in the region 10 metres. If I can find this report I'll post it here.
This quake series is apparently some serious subduction activity.

More aftershocks in the same area overnight and during today, but none were large enough to trigger a tsunami advisory/warning. There may have been 50 earthquakes/tremors in this location since yesterday

Yes Steven, this relentless movement is quite incredible.
I found an article about this series of quakes and the science of seismology (not a long article) - Recent major earthquakes show underestimated potential for "Superquakes"

I believe (and have said for a long time now) that 'we' are in a new age of enlightenment regarding the science of tectonics.

Cheers, Duck.

I'm guessing that some of you guys might be feeling similar to me when I say I feel a bit sick in the stomach watching the poor Solomon region relentlessly experiencing all of these quakes.
When Christchurch's multiple quakes were happening, I felt the same way. I know how unsettled my friends were in Christchurch at that time, and I can only guess that the island communities in the Solomons region must be equally perturbed by what's going on there.
Imagining the forces at play here must be tremendous and I can only hope to goodness that it will settle down soon. I've lost count of the number of earthquakes this region has/is experiencing.
