Hi, Fossy and all.
Drought declaration in NSW has a fishy smell to me.
We are close to average for rain this year. March was very low, and April low, but this month is well above average already, and the summer was very wet.
The first three weeks of June were very warm: consistently three degrees above average. Now we have frosts, after four weeks frost free.

I have been banging on about this for ages , especially to poor old Blizz, but this Murri St Katoomba site is just terrible in full sun - there is no way that Katoomba was 2C warmer than Blackheath today. Maybe being a nick-picker but what is the point of this site if it is inaccurate - would love to hear whether other people in Katoomba / Leura had a max of 11C today. I realize my site is far from perfect so I'm not using my site records in the argument

Katoomba June 23, 2008 - 1015m
Figures for June 2008 so far
Ave min - 6.2
Ave max - 11.2

Mt Boyce June 23, 2008 - 1080m
Figures for June 2008 so far
Ave min - 5.7
Ave max 10.4

this has been a cloudy month generally so probably not a great example but it will be interesting to contrast the figures this week while it is clear & sunny (classic Sydney Basin winter weather)

Yeah, its in a pretty shoddy spot in the middle of suburbia. Its at the top of a hill, only metres from a house and right next to the footpath. I remember speaking to one of the BoM guys about it when they were conducting interviews and it seems they were finding it hard to get someone to take it on. I would have done it, if I lived in Katoomba.

Its not a highly rated site by the BoM either, from what I recall.

We are heading into more classic Canberra winter weather, with whopping fogs the last few mornings, clear sunny days, and quite a bit colder than so-far. There's a strongish wind getting up tonight though, part of that dodgey southern front (no rain coming they reckon).

Though probably a frost-prone site you would reckon that that Katoomba Aquatic centre would have someone there on a daily basis to take some readings?? I just fear that the daily readings could even start to effect the forecasts for Katoomba- Upper Blue Mtns. I suppose that you could site stations all over the place between Boddington Hill & Mt Victoria & get all sorts of readings depending on aspect & exposure but when the Katoomba site is consistently well above surrounding areas in clear, sunny conditions (it seems fine on overcast / rainy days) it just raises questions about its' validity. Katoomba is the largest urban area in the Upper Blue Mountains and is noted on all the Sydney TV forecasts (the media for the majority of the population) and is thus it is an important station - but I understand it has a chequered history. Not BOM bashing but I am surprised that this site, with its propensity for extreme weather compared to much of the surrounding area re snowfall, low summer maxima relative to the rest of NSW & its location as almost a remote arm of the Sydney metropolitan area is not regarded as more of a priority. Another Blue Mountains nut rants & raves

Andrew, I lived in the Blue Mts for six wonderful years, one of them in Katoomba in Kundibar st off Murri st and i would have to say that it was the warmest spot that i lived in the mts. A really sunny aspect and never much in the way of frost. Also lived in Wentworth Falls, Leura and Blackheath, much colder.

How long have they been recording from Murri st?Always seems to me that the temps reported for Katoomba are warmer than i would have thought it would be?
I am with you, move it down to the pool or Kingsford Smith park or the South st council depot.

They could even move it out to the RSPCA at Mort St North Katoomba - it always seems much colder out there than elsewhere when we have meetings out there
Andrew
Interesting about the Murri St area Avalon - an elevated area but obviously a sheltered one.
My concern is not the area but the sighting as Blizz pointed out - too much concrete & housing in close vicinity!!
Another warm day (for winter) up here - I think it was up to 11.5C at one stage - had the house all opened up to get an airing - ?will we see some winter anytime soon
P.S - 14C at Katoomba recorded today - 11C at Mt Boyce. 12C & 11C respectively yesterday but it was actually 12.4C at Katoomba & 10.6C at Mt Boyce. I rest my case your honour!

Thats what i mean, 14C in Katoomba at the end of June? Doesnt sound right to me!Must be global warming.

The area around Murri st gets the sun early and keeps it late and the cold air at night drains down into Catalina park, so yeah, i think it is a warm spot.
I thought there would be standards applied for the siting of an official weather station, ie. not near buildings roads etc?

Hope you all get some good old fashioned winter weather soon, up there in the mountains.

No fog this morning! And tons of contrails just after dawn (very high ones, possibly planes heading from across the pacific to melbourne). Lovely warm day, but this evening the wind up here is howling again, from the NW.

Geez Ron
No weather station currently at Walcha but looked up the averages on the BOM - July average = -2 to 12 - not a back diurnal range for winter on the NSW tablelands.
The Upper Mtns has a similar elevation but we are on top of a hill with 2 to 9 being a rough average July range. Walcha is probably surrounded by elevated tableland I'm assuming. Do you see much snow up there & what is your lowest ever minimum?
I will guess -11C

It's cold enough here for breathing vapour while I'm watching TV. My thermometer is at work (the air con has felt it has to heat the place to 26 and I needed to convince them it really was that hot, numbers always seem to work, they came and fixed it). So I don't know how cold it is, but it's the coldest it's been this winter.

Wind howling.

Was that -3.5C or +3.5C at 1815 Ron? Apologies for sounding sceptical, but from what i've found no other station on the NT's around that time were below +4C (ie Armidale Ap, Glen Innes or Salisbury Plains - non BoM). I do realise though that Walcha's average min would probably be the lowerst out of all those areas.

I'm seriously considering staying in Walcha one winters night (this year???) just to experience (& measure smile ) those extreme low temps. Any ideas of a good spot up that way? Not into camping but would be willing to shack up in the car if it come to that - would be worth it I reckon! I was actually in Walcha earlier this year but was far too wet to even look around.

Think i'm just jealous really, i'll be lucky to get a single grass temp that low this winter - I haven't even officially been below zero here (air temp wise) at all as yet (~12yrs), lowest ever is 0.3C.

Keep those obs from Walcha coming - the more the better I say. laugh

Rather interesting that SW Sydney is substantially colder than anywhere else in Sydney, even richmond etc.... big different in temps on some locations and only like 10km apart some... quite amazing smile
