I recently received this… not a bad idea to contribute experiences.

Batten down the hatches - there’s a storm brewing at the Museum of Tropical Queensland

The Museum of Tropical Queensland is looking for people with first-hand experience with cyclones, tornados and other “big blows” to help tell the story of how these fierce weather phenomena have shaped the lives and lifestyles of North Queenslanders in its upcoming exhibition on tropical cyclones.

The exhibition will look at cyclones that have influenced North Queensland over the past 100 years with a focus on how the community has prepared for, lived through, cleaned up and counted the cost after each successive disaster.

Museum of Tropical Queensland Acting Director Mr Jason Elliott said it was even interesting that people settle in places like North Queensland considering the catastrophic effects of some cyclones and the unpredictability of where and when they would strike.

Mr Elliott puts this down to the ‘she’ll be right mate’ attitude of North Queenslanders.

“We just take these storms in our stride,” Mr Elliott said.

“Cyclones are such a part of life in the North that we’re sure many locals will have interesting stories, photos or objects that they’d like to share with the Museum’s visitors. I encourage anyone who would like to contribute to the exhibition to get in touch with us and help us tell this compelling story.”

People who’d like to contribute to the tropical cyclones exhibition should contact the exhibition curator Mr Robert de Jong on 4726 0652 or by email: robert.dejong@qm.qld.gov.au.

Through the Community Pass program, locals from Townsville, Burdekin, Charters Towers and Hinchinbrook receive free entry to the museum thanks to the generous support of their councils. Due to changes to the Townsville Community Pass, Townsville locals will pay half price admission to the museum from 30 April 2013 thanks to the ongoing generous support of the Townsville City Council.

The Museum of Tropical Queensland, part of the Queensland Museum, is open from 9.30am - 5pm daily (closed Good Friday, Christmas Day and the morning of ANZAC Day).

52mm here for 24hrs to 6am this morning. Maybe this will be the best we see from this event, totals well under what was forecast but this does not come as a surprise.

17mm over night. Looks like all the rain is over Townsville and Mackay again this morning. Nice and gusty as well. Arlington Reef recorded a 87km gust over night and at the airport recorded a gust at 65kms. Hopefully we can get a little more in our gauges before this low moves SE and takes it all with it.

Some good gusts of wind around down here in Portsmith, as well as evidence of a windy night with the odd tree branch and leaves strewn along the roadside.

It sure is cool Trav, good to see the Ville getting some rain!

Too true my brutha, would be nice to see it persist through winter for a change.

The Cairns post has an article which states Cairns will experinece winds today similar to a Cat 1 system although without the cyclone being present. GFS has these strong winds hanging round into Friday. Link here

Dunno who wrote our forecast for today, but could it be any more wrong? Scattered showers, windy, thunderstorms and moderate to heavy falls? Yeah right. I'd be cautious to even call this scattered drizzle, let alone everything else. All over, although at least it looks like we can look forward to some cool nights.

Yup all over for as alright Things. Blue sky and sunshine here now. Defiantly all the heavy stuff is south of us now. Townsville is getting a good soaking which i'm sure they are enjoying getting more than us....lol grin Bring out the only jumper i own for the cooler months i and get winter over with and bring on the next wet i say. grin

Still some nice gusty conditions though. Arlington reef are still recording gusts of 70kms and here in Cairns over 50kms. Good weather for wind surfing.

Livio stated on the news last night that Bellenden Kerr is the wettest place in Australia and Babinda the wettest town for anyone interested .

58mm for us out of that rain yesterday and overnight.

Only 43.5mm since Monday AM.... had been hoping for and expecting 100mm by 9am tomorrow for the four days..... doesn't look like that is going to happen.

Yeah Babinda has won the wettest place in Australia for the last 7-8 years i believe and proudly displays there trophy the Golden Gumboot with a umbrella coming out of it, in the post office window. Mt Bellender usually sits at 6th or 7th wettest places on earth.

These areas can change every year depending on the rainfall which fall,as we all know how sporadic the falls can be.
