Niece and her partner run a cattle station near Tambo and are now in drought conditions and will have to start shooting stock if they don't get some rain soon. Can't get anyone to buy them, abattoirs are not buying, not worth agistting with freight prices at $100.00 a head per 1000 klms each way and $4.00 a head per week.

While we have had a crap Wet they haven't seen any decent rain for months and the pasture is just not there to be grazed. I for one would give up next years wet if it meant they got it instead. People are hurting all over central Qld at the moment.

there was a massive cattlemans meeting in richmond last week to talk about what the farmers need and can do atm. the current thought is to ask the federal government to buy up 1000 head of cattle from the farmers and give it away to overseas countries to take off some pressure both at the farm and the sale yards.

What a weird start to the year

Yeppoon average 558mm Jan - May (1402.6mm currently)

Rockhampton 459.5mm (993.2mm currently)

Townsville 873.2 mm ( 532.4mm currently)

Cairns 1565.7mm ( 856.6mm currently)

So Rockhampton is wetter than Cairns and Yeppoon has had so far this year almost what Cairns is supposed to have in terms of rainfall ?

Good analysis Vinnie... Cairns has been very poor while you guys have been relatively swamped.
But you don't have to go far south of Cairns ie less than 100km to get some better results for the Far North.
South Johnstone (near Innisfail) had about 1700mm to May 1 (av approx 2100mm) add another 300mm so far for May and it is not so bad for the Far Northern region.
Also note that Copperlode Dam... Cairns water supply is over the spillway.

We've had more wet days in the last 2 weeks than the entire wet season I think.

although we have had small brief showers. including another 0.6mm early this morning. some bigger puddles in the city area so must have been a bit heavier in the cbd.

Yes Vinnie, this is what happens when a degraded ex cyclone makes a beeline down the middle of the eastern region of Qld. We got stuff all from him but he dropped huge amounts of rain as he slowed and almost stalled down your way. The Wet in Townsville has basically failed to eventuate this season. If you look at your rainfall without this ex cyclone your totals would be as pathetic as ours are.

Actually SBT, whilst true a lot of rain fell due to that system, their February and March figures were extremely healthy as well. Those 2 months alone accounted for their average. What they saw a lot of down south was trough systems forming with strong and moist easterly fetches. What we were left with was mostly fine and very warm weather.

yeah gazza it was a continual pattern of upper systems that screwed us over and brought all that rain south of us. we spent most of the year with surface or upper lows south of us which of course does nothing for us.
the ex cyclone dropped about 200mm of rain on us in late january. that made us scrape over the january average.

had a few drops fall on me at vincent around lunchtime, not enough to wet the ground though.
nice line of rain to our NW atm.

Yes you are right Gazza, I forgot about the mongrel rain stealing troughs.

Nice and overcast about 3.00pm, got out of the gym 15 minutes later and nada, all disappeared. I hate weather and it hates me, apparently.
