There's a hum in the air around here...like the sound as if you are blowing down a hollow tube..is that an electrical sound??
It is also bucketing and a few good flashes.

June dewpoint records are between 14 and 16 at most lowland Victorian sites; a few of these might get challenged in 78 minutes' time.

Thanks Blair that's what it sort of felt like! But can you discuss - how frequently do we get moist NW infeeds like those of last few weeks at this time of year? and then checking the sat pics there is a direct southerly burst coming up? Variability?

hunter - just got back inside - my gauge has over 30mm - that's a 20 mm jump!

Another flang!

Melbourne Road Weather Alert

IDV30000

Road Weather Alert for Melbourne
for all suburbs
Issued at 9:58 pm EST on Friday 31 May 2013.
Heavy rainfall Friday night and early Saturday morning could result in flash flooding over roads and will make driving conditions dangerous across suburban Melbourne.
Could someone explain why, at 9:58pm the BoM issue the road warning, when the actual impact on Melbourne began much earlier?

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

Reduce speed.
Maintain a greater distance between you and the vehicle in front.
For information on any road closures, please contact your local council or the Police.

The next alert will be issued by 5:00 am EST Saturday.

I find it funny that we have a great Storm in late May, better than anything between October & April! One got through the forcefield!

Ridiculous rainfall for this part of the world. 15mm in 10 minutes at Melbourne Airport, plus the 54mm since 9am is a record daily total for June (as it will go to 9am 1st June), and it should get higher. Very impressive.

I've always considered my area in Melbourne's Dandenong Ranges to be a 'magnet' for thunderstorms, especially for those coming out of the northwest, and it's definitely lived up to its reputation, with two very close lightning strikes less than a kilometre from my house an hour ago, and about 28mm of rain so far! Loving it!! grin

The radar looks the same for Melbourne now as it did here around 5pm...this is rather incredible for May/June!

Was woken up, or should I say that my shut-eye opened to match the other after a lightning flash and thunder just a moment ago, to check that we are currently on about 60'ish mls so far. Will be interesting to see the final tally later in the morning.
There's gotta be flooding all over the place...we are surrounded by creeks/flood plains around here...I'm on a hill thank goodness.
100% humidity currently..feels almost monsoonal in nature.

My facebook has a few posts on it about a bow echo out our way last night. We got smashed big time out at Pakenham and it will be interesting to drive around and see the water damage as it bucketed down and the lightning and the rolling thunder was insane. Would have loved to have had this storm in December when it was a bit warmer.

Yes Lindsay I did see that bow echo, looked awesome on the radar. With things starting to clear out now I went outside to check the gauge... 90mm which brings me to 102mm for the past two days.

Darebin Creek is about 20 metres wide it's incredible!

Merry Winter everyone!
