I was surprised Coldsnap because I did my homework before I moved here and looked at sights in Tasmania at roughly the same latitude, height above sea level and proximity to the sea (for example Melton Mowbray in Tasmania) and expected an April around the same temps yet Melton Mowbray only had 2 days the entire April below 12C where where I live now have had around 10! Like I said, I was very surprised! We haven't even had a cold April either, it was slightly above average!

The atmospheric lapse rate is about 3C for every 1000ft (300m). So living at altitude there is that cooling affect to factor in. Also, being on the lee side of the southern Alps there is good night time cooling because the air is dry.

You get the best snowfalls in Canterbury from warm advective sets ups when there is mid level moisture originating from the subtropics being undercut by a polar origin airflow. Doesn't happen that often but when it does its huge.

850hpa temps forecast down as low as -8C Steven for Tuesday next week which will translate into a max of 1-2C inland Canterbury, not a huge amount of moisture associated with it at this stage but some very low temps for late May!!

Definately Ms Milo, this will be a North island event too, temps of -5C at 850hpa right up to Auckland, perhaps some May records will be broken...

4C currently in Christchurch at 11am and the coldest air down to -7C at 850hpa will be arriving in the next hour or 2. Snow showers are unfortunately being pushed out to sea though due to the southwest flow. Impressive cold though!

Looks like the Banks peninsula is copping the brunt of the passing showers. Could be some impressive accumulations by the end of the event.

Spot on Bogong, there was 5-10cms already on the lower hills when I was driving home at 5pm tonight, should be upwards of 20-30cm on the higher peaks by tomorrow morning, some cracker frosts forecast down the road at Twizel tomorrow morning as well with -8C...

Christchurch due to see sea level snow again next Thursday, and potentially again end of next week. But I think Thursday is nearly assured. Typical NZ hogging more than its fair share of our snow as usual.

Yep this one is going to be particularly nasty with 850hpa temps of -9C above Christchurch for a time on Thursday and thickness values down to 510, the lowest I have ever seen!! I live 300m asl too so I would be surprised if our maximums get above 0C on Thursday!! Christchurch should be around 3 or 4C for a maximum. Sorry about hogging all this cold weather!! Lol

Enjoy!, I did not realize you live there now. That is a great spot close to the alps.

Yes a great location in Sheffield for snow, locals say it snows at least 3 or 4 times a year!! Surprisingly I have found the airport gets colder minimum temperatures though due to a NW breeze always seeming to pop up at night crueling any chances of really cold overnight temps...

Pete28, I have looked through my holiday snaps from NZ in Jan 2012 to see if I had any of Sheffield. smile
I found one of Sheffield Pie Shop. Apologies for the blurryness, but if I recall correctly the TranzAlpine train literally flew through the village!

I assume this one is just west of Sheffield, as it was taken one minute before the pie shop photo:

Indeed that is Sheffield alright Seabreeze, I had a free pie from there yesterday because my mother in law works there! That second photo is about 1km before the pie shop with Abners Head in the background. It's a beautiful location and fantastic for snow, at the moment they are expecting between 30-40cm for Sheffield though no doubt that will change by Wednesday!!

This is now shaping up as a very serious weather event for Canterbury:

What about some of those other big recent snowfalls like 2006/2011?....
http://christchurchcitylibraries.com/science/earth/weather/snow/

I thought some of those already broke records?. Why would this one be bigger like 1992?.

NZ still hogging Australia's snow because our high ridges keeping ridging over the SE dipping into the deep southern ocean just SW off NZ.

Yeah models have backed off the big falls for Christchurch now though where I live inland and 300m asl they are expecting around 50-60cm of snow and from 500m asl up they are expecting 100-150cm, truly exceptional!!

Yes that is what I was thinking, 1m of snow above 500m. But temps backed off a little.
