Re discussion on 25 degree maxima in July. If we use the Financial Year (July 1 to June 30) as a reference, Observatory Hill (150+ years) has never recorded 25 degrees between June 27 and July 21 (inclusive). Only a handful of days between June 7 and August 3 have ever recorded 25. August 13 is the last day never to have recorded 25.

None of the models show anything near 25c at the surface, I'm not confident the warm 850t will transfer to the surface. Ground is cool and damp here, so not ideal for warm temperatures, plus the July record here is 27.8c. Surface wind on 0z GFS looks too light for the airmass to have any effect, will only be 5-10knots at 10m.

I think higher altitude locations will have a comparatively warmer day than low land areas.

Thanks for that info, that makes this Thursday all the more exiting then to see if that figure will be reached. I am not sure why the models are seeing an inversion holding below 850mb despite no cloud and a roaring westerly. I have never seen an inversion hold in those conditions unless there was a fog at the surface trapped between hills when sun very low. This will not be the case on the coast on Thursday.

Well I don't like going against you GB because you're often right, but I just don't see it on the surface charts. If we had 50-60kph at the surface we could see 25-27c, but I don't like going against every single model and forecast. For some reason they are not interested, personally I think wind will be borderline this far north.

I hope the Santa Ana wind does blow through wink might dry the place out a bit. The wind will certainly be dry if it does eventuate.

URGHHH Another cloudy day here after getting over 20mm yesterday while Sydney basked in sunshine. One bonus is that it only got down to 11c last night versus low single digits of clear areas.

Forecast Maximums here are only 21C for Thursday-Friday.
The record high for July is currently 24.8C at Maitland Visitors Centre- but we only have 15 years of records at the current station, so all records are vulnerable.
It is also unusual for records to be broken with such a dramatic form reversal though -most high records seem to occur after sustained warm spells (eg August 1995 if anyone else remembers it - I was living in Camden at the time), the current conditions are still quite cold and damp.

7.5c at Canberra airport at 3PM. On the assumption that it doesn't get any higher, I believe that'll be the lowest maximum for quite some time here.

I'm not fully versed in where to track down weather records, but according to weatherzone, the lowest maximum is 10.5c, in 1975.

Happy to be corrected if I am wrong

EDIT: It would seem that the now disused Canberra City site recorded a 5.2c maximum in 1978.

The BoM have ever so lightly nudged up Thursday's maximum to 22 in Sydney.

Wow at Canberra temps. Stunning day of 15 here today. For two places with such similar climates, sometimes we can be very different.

Funny BoM have pushed temps up now on Thursday considering that latest models have somewhat cooled the air mass. The peak warmth of the air mass looks to be in the morning before cooling throughout the day. Still with the 850s + NW'ly you would think 23c is likely in Sydney, with a chance of 24-25c. I'm looking forward to it being a heat lover :-)

Inverell RS managed 20.5c today, pretty warm for 600m+ASL in July. Inverell town AWS was close to a July record, rounded temp at 22c, record 22.5c.

If that air mass makes it to the surface we should see an easy 25c, depends what the wind does tomorrow. Looks like Thursday should be the warmest day, even though tomorrow has the best potential.

For Observatory Hill on sunny days when the sea breeze is not active, you can usually add 2 degrees to the forecast maximum, as you could have today and yesterday. Therefore 24 on Thursday is quite likely, even 25, although most of Sydney will get 22-23. The Westerly stream looks reasonably strong, so it doesn't look like the sea breeze will be woken from its Winter slumber.

The fog never lifted in Canberra, all day. My place was above it, and evidently was sunny for most of the day as the house was warm and the garden lights were charged, but I can't see any lights below me now, it's the thickest blanket of fog ever. Never seen anything like this. No wind, just fog. People down in Canberra are saying it was going the full pea-souper at home-time.

I was in Canberra all day and you are right ant, it hardly moved. Around 2-3pm it certainly lifted a bit, but by 6pm it was thick. I drove up Mount Ainslie around 9.15pm and the fog seemed to hit a hard limit within 40m of the summit, so around 800m. Driving to work was very difficult at 9.30

It's clearing up lots now, I can almost see Civic clearly (a bit over 2 kilometers away), but Telstra tower is completely blanketed. I normally have a great view, this sucks.

Thought it must have been fog or heavy cloud cover coming over a frost. Once in a blue moon we get a fog that goes all day too. None so far this year. They are bone cold days.

a solid fog here again this morning (although thinning already) and airport was -4.3 earlier, wonder what the ag station will tell us?

Toes are chilly at the moment that's for sure. Will be a great blue sky day later.

And it's groundhog day, thick fog over Canberra again, although I can see a bit of lighter stuff to the south. My place was above it all night and this morning, sunny. Bitterly cold night though, everything was frozen and frosty this morning, that's finally The End for the tomato plants.

I think the fog is slightly thinner today and the airport's operating, although oddly two flights out of sydney (virgin and QF) are listed as cancelled , were due to arrive after noon.

So the fog is now lifted DaveM?. I can still see the fog over Canberra of course on the vis satellite, perhaps still some near Eglington?. Yes ok sort of frost here also last night, nothing special though, a hot day up hear today, should be nudging July records this afternoon, except for Canberra. Perisher much warmer than Canberra today.
