Thanks Stevo - your comments on both videos are welcome! As are the comments by Teckert and Ian and anyone else who has slipped my mind for the moment. The video of the mixed shower demonstrates the difficulty of determining what kinds of flakes and wafers and other non-droppy icy entities are in the mix when you're standing out in it or observing it from shelter. There's only one thing for it I think and that's to put out or hold out some black cloth or probably any garment would do and collect samples as they fall and examine them with a magnifying glass. But only if there's spare time to do it. Wearing a black overcoat or outer jumper or jacket would probably be good.

Now for a link to an AdelaideNow article, where the word snow predominates in reference to Mt Lofty and is qualified as "sleet-like snow" on occasion: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south...m-1226682340603
Title: "Steady rain lashes South Australia but warmer weather in sight"
by: KATRINA STOKES AND SAM KELTON
From: The Advertiser July 22, 2013 1:06PM

Here are some quotes:
"GALLERY: Stunning photos of snow in the Hills"
"Hills awakes to a winter wonderland
Snow arrived in the Hills Saturday morning - bringing pleasure to many residents who made the most of the winter wonderland, but causing havoc for motorists.
Crafers and Mount Lofty residents and visitors could not get enough of the white stuff, making snowmen and throwing snowballs before the sleet-like snow melted."
"Tegan Giola of Cheltenham and Jasmine Banham of Seaton finish their Mount Lofty Summit jog in a snow fall".

Is it any wonder that I gave up reading newspapers a long time ago.

The comments below the story are worth reading if you've got some time. Here's a couple that give two perspectives:
"scott of winter Posted at 1:30 PM July 22, 2013
Sick to death of people claiming it was snow. Really it is a bit sad. It was hail!!!
"Haterzgonhate of Adelaide Posted at 11:24 AM July 22, 2013
I was at Mt Lofty from 6am onwards. Although there was an abundance of small hail, it did at one point snow. Albeit it was a light snow, it did snow. Regardless, do people really need to be such killjoys? Who cares? Rain or Hail ... people had fun. Get over yourselves!"

It does matter to some people Haterzgonhate, but yes it was good to see people particularly children out enjoying themselves and throwing icy conglomerate at each other with happy abandon smile

51.5mm event total, up to around 85-90mm for the month, somewhere around there. Been a good winter so far, lets see if we can get a clean sweep and get 3 winter months in a row above average, been a long time since that has happened.

Finished with 68mm for the 6 day event. 124.5mm for the month. Only need another 19mm to break my all-time monthly record back in July 2009 (9 years of records).

My saturday up Mt Lofty
5.15am wake up 30min to get to the Freeway tunnels from Westlakes with no showers. Entered the tunnels dry on one side and hailing on the other which was a big shock as you can imagine. Arrived at the summit at 6.12 to hail and sleet falling.(see pic)

7.12am this came through http://youtu.be/lIAqcHY3hSE .

At this point there would have been 8 people max at Lofty and a bloke made this snowman (not children as the papers said :P)

Caught up with Unstable where we saw a decent hail shower that had flakes in it as he mentioned with Unstables video. Here was my video near the end of the shower at 8.12am http://youtu.be/lIAqcHY3hSE .

I then caught up with Weathermaniac from Whyalla and we caught this at 8.56am (sorry about my excitement) you can hear Weathermaniac in the background also rather excited aswell http://youtu.be/W23Wyj1RGOs
After a coffee and a thaw out, a while of radar checking we figured at 10am that was it for the day.

Here's a gif file for Saturday 20th only - it's about 4mb

My source for these satpic images was the Brisbane Storm Chasers page http://realtime2.bsch.au.com/ir_sat.html

We should have weather systems like this more often smile
