Sure is drying out in the garden. Low humidity and fairly summer like temperatures. Looks like 30C will be hit in Sydney later this week from the forecasts.

The ground is very dry here. No rain since early August.

The grass is starting to go brown in some places around here with no rainfall in the last 4 weeks now, bit of a worry with no significant rain forecasted in the near future either. We need rain now with everything warming up.

No rain in 25 days in Bankstown and the same story at Observatory Hill apart from two 0.2 readings which look decidedly dodgy. It's strange weather, almost no weather. A string of mild nights and warm sunny days. The smell of smoke sometimes ruins otherwise perfect Spring days.

Another statistic for the Sydney area - 11 consecutive days reaching 21 deg C 70F, with at least another 7 to go. Unlike the 'hot' August of 1995, there have been no very warm days on the coast, just day after day of 21 to 24.

My lawn is looking pretty brown now. I took a spade to the soil yesterday and there isn't much moisture left in there.

Could really do with a good heavy rain day over Sydney giving a good 20mm plus.

Things just need agood damp down and clear the air a bit.

Observatory Hill is now at 26 consecutive rainless days. Along with most of the Sydney basin.
The caveat here is that I have put some data quality measures in by removing the obviously erroneous readings; something the BoM seems incapable of doing these days.

It will almost certainly be 27 tomorrow putting it in the top 10. Below is the league table; we have made the finals.

Code:
Last day Days
1995-9-2	47
1970-7-26	34
1975-6-12	34
2002-7-23	33
1871-9-16	29
1865-9-8	28
1946-8-13	27

It has been raining in Canterbury and Horsley Park in the last hour. Apparently . poke

Can anyone in those areas confirm? It's a bit hard to see with all this clear blue sky.

Yikes, 6 months without any rain at all? Would make for some fairly devastating bushfires, property loss and most likely deaths. Not to mention the region would look very brown, dusty and ugly after such a drought. I think I prefer a bit of greenery in my landscape smile

Had more than enough in June to last us the rest of the year ( quarter of yearly average) dams were overflowing and the works. For someone who spends time outdoors never want miserable weather like that any time soon.. cold wet and windy almost every day.

I like greenage too Marts.
We certainly need some precipitation. Even if it is just a one off 10 - 20 mm's. It's something into the earth.
With this daily warmth, it has been worth putting the sprinkler on for an hour or so.
Looks like a deep southerly fetch might be possible in a week or so. Might be the juice provider.

I remember 1995 very well -was living in Camden back then, 47 days without rain from about July 17 until the September 2 deluge.
That record is unlikely to be beaten.
Record high temps were recorded in August 1995 that still stand today in many centres, conversely early September 1995 recorded some record cold temps - a spectacular form reversal.
Obviously that is unlikely to happen this year, but shows there is no correlation between early season warm temps and intenisty and duration of hot weather in a temperate oceanic climate.

Looks like a possible return to winter like conditions next week! Is that due to an East Coast Low or frontal system?

Does a warm August say anything about the months to come? I downloaded Bankstown average maxima into a spreadsheet and calculated the correlation coefficients between average August maxima and maxima for the following months. The results are:

September +0.19 - very weak
October +0.17 - very weak
November +0.50 - moderate
December +0.01 - none
January +0.02 - none

So there seems to be a very week correlation between August maxima and those for September and October and, oddly enough, an apparently significant correlation with November maxima. Once we're into Summer, there is no relationship.

Looking at three past 'hot' Augusts (average Max 21+, 2 above average):

1982: - average September and October, Very warm November, average December, warm January and February.

1995 - very cool September, average October and November followed by cool Summer

2009 - very warm September, cool October, very warm November, warm Summer.

What is the 'cloud' off newcastle at the moment? It looks like some sort of plume with a stationary source. Is a ship on fire or something?

Farmers on the southern tablelands of New South Wales are having to shoot their cattle because conditions have been so dry. This shows how dry the area is becoming.
