Well it's only a 30% chance of 0 to 1mm of rainfall which could possibly include thunder. So they are suggesting it's pretty slim. I agree, it's extremely windy and very dry so any storm would probably be high based and lack much in the way of oomph.

Are the weather bureau ever audited for quality control? (serious question.)

Not sure it helps, but on and off over the past 10 days there has been some quite reasonable morning dews (Autumn like) here at Shellharbour, about 2 km inland.

It helps in as much that we can discount the possibility of dew that you mentioned.
The 10 min observations leading up to the 0.2 occurrences completely rule that out.

In the recent past what used to happen was that (at OH at least) the automatic gauge was compared against a manual rain gauge reading. Every so often the two were compared and if there was a discrepancy, the manual gauge took precedence and the records were updated to reflect that. I guess the constant sweep of funding cuts have done away with the manual backup readings.

Up to day 32 now.

I make it we would need to get to Friday 20th Sept without rain to equal to record set in 1995?

Can't see it, rain showers are coming, for the coastal fringe any way, Obs Hill will get a drop or two in the next 7 days looking at the models. Even later this afternoon is an outside chance.

Looks to me like the Sydney radar is picking up a burn off just NW of Penrith? Looks a little odd as the 'shower' is fixed to a spot at the base of the Blue Mountains and is billowing out down wind from that spot?

Yeah looks like it Jon. Imagine this sort of setup during January. Would be a 40C+ day with Catastrophic fire dangers.

I am in Richmond at the moment. There's some big burn offs to the South of here and was fairly smokey for part of the way here, although where I am now is clear. Warm, sunny and windy, no sign of any precipitation.

P.S. all the traffic lights in Richmond seem to be are out.

Yeah, had a feeling what the radar was picking wasn't rain, good job it isn't January as mentioned!

Burning off is something I would leave to the experts as to how much should be done and when. But I am a bit surprised that today was considered suitable. It's quite windy here. Fire danger signs on the way over said danger was high.

There is a very very high chance that if you see smoke columns today it is not a hazard reduction. Fires popping up all over the place at present..

Yes - I retract my prior post. Heard on the news that there's a bushfire at Castlereagh with two homes in danger.

Data quality control is normally not done until several weeks (at least) after the event, so what ultimately ends up in the database won't necessarily be reflected on the daily/hourly observation web pages you're seeing.

I'm assuming, although I don't know for sure, that the main reason why Observatory Hill doesn't have a manual rain gauge (and hasn't had since 1990) is because of the distance between the observing site and the Bureau office (which is near Central Station), especially as the Sydney CBD near 9am is not exactly the easiest place to get around in a hurry. There are still manual gauges at places like Melbourne and Adelaide where the logistics are a bit more practical.

By the way, a swag of early-season records are in danger in coastal NSW, including Sydney (31.3), Richmond (32.8) and Williamtown (31.7). Sydney has already equalled its record for highest September 9am temperature.

Some day out there for early September! Feels like it should be December at least!

Here's a picture of some of the fires taken from a safe distance at Streeton Lookout at freeman's Reach, looking South:

Air quality is pretty rank over Sydney right now. Here close to the CBD the sun has gone behind a veil of thin smoke / dust / dirt.

Fires continues to burn out Penrith way which will be contributing to the air quality problem. House on fire at Winmalee
