Can't believe this topic hasn't been started! Have not started a thread or even posted a pic here for ages. Not had anything decent to post really...
The wait for a half decent weather happening down my way has been worth it though with a nice little lightning active evening last weekend. Beautiful clear air bolts from mid level storms with very little rain of the type that SA excels in, when it happens that is lol. Like I said been years really since storms have come this close to my area.
Anyways right as the sun sank below the horizon, timing perfection!

exif is in the images

This one the hairy beast of the evening!

And this the best I personally have done. A decade of photographing these storms, hundreds of lightning pics, literally. Gonna be hard for me to top this, if ever. The chase though is ever on.....

The left hand strike is about 400 metres from me, RH about 500-600 metres away and the two behind the hill of pines about a KM. The two closest came down simultaneously with a temporary white out of my vision, the two middle bolts were simultaneous about (guessing) 20 seconds prior. I sat out the rest in the safety of my car with camera off the tripod in the car with me. It rained bolts all around me and closer than the 400 metre mark. If I had left the cam out on the tripod the pics would have been amazing, but if I did you can bet a bolt would have fried it and this pic would only be a memory.... smile

Saturday 21st Sept, the visibility was relatively good, despite a pale of smoke, from several cool weather burn-offs. It was 46 kilometres from the summit of Mount Franklin in the Northern Australian Alps, to where I took the shot. The colours of the hills through smoke are beautiful.

Monday 23rd Sept, a light frost melted soon after sunrise. Mists in the valleys and on the slopes in the NW of the ACT took their time to lift. The Murrumbidgee River.

Lifting mist and Black Cypress (Callitris endlicheri) on the slopes of Woodstock Nature Reserve.

It was blowy all day today, in the ACT. At the Canberra Yacht Club weather station, wind was recorded at 43.5 knots, just after midday.

A gust in my garden today ... with Peppermints and a Cherry.

It is supposed to be Spring, ... hopefully? Or eventually?

September and October are the windy months in our neck of the bush, so strong cold winds are to be expected. So cold, I nearly had to roll my sleeves down today ... but I went inside. Sunny but cold.

It is still delightfully misty in the early morning on the 'bidgee above The Bass Hole ... and into the Yass Valley to Mount Nutter ... seen from the SE.

The visibility wasn't good yesterday afternoon Sat 19th Oct in my neck of the bush. An Easterly wind followed by a period of calm, had smoke from the Illawarra considerably reducing the visibility in the Northern Alps.

In the Yass Valley looking towards the Northern Brindabellas.

From Pig Hill(6 kilometres away) to Wombat Hill(@ 11 ks) ... at sunset. Seeing detail in the sun, is most unusual.

Geez some superb images here guys, mean clear air Orebound, rather jealous of the October you guys had up there poke

Season has been awfully slow in SA this year, nothing of major interest all Spring, have nabbed a few shots however.

Back in mid September.

And from late October.

So yeah, not overly inspiring but something at least, hopefully some decent storms to chase in the near future!

A sun shower.

At times, the limited visibility in the ACT and the Yass Valley (just over the NW ACT border) has been very interesting. From clear days with long views to 60+ kilometres, to as little as a few hundred metres, thanks to smoke.

On a clear day, facing East from One Tree Hill NE of Hall, over-looking grazing lands the last of the old Gungahlin State Forest.

Still from One Tree Hill, looking South to Black Mountain and the Brindabella Ranges on the horizon.

... and another day, from the Spring Range again NE of Hall, looking SSE to a smokey Mount Ainslie.

Warren.

Wet Wet Wet, those photos are unbelievably insane!! Great photos mate grin

That second photo, it looks a remarkably like a tornado but of course I'm sure I'm wrong, either way it looks intense and dangerous! smile

Cheers guys. ASF, funny you should mention tornado because just 5 minutes later the storm actually spawned what appeared to be the development of a weak tornado. Below is the cropped image:

And below is the original:

And this was the Emerald Doppler radar at the time, with the storm located to the North-East of Clermont:

And the corresponding radar image:

Cheers Wet Wet Wet! smile

Hmmm yes that does look like a weak tornado - certainly can't be a dust devil as there is a cumulonimbus thunderstorm cloud right above it, dust devils occur in dry, sunny conditions - or maybe a gustnado? And all that dust being whipped up to the left of the tornado/gustnado in the second photo, is that due to downdraft/microburst wind squalls? smile

I like to celebrate the end of a season with a painting. It's a good way for me to sum up the season.

Spring here started-off being foggy, then it was intermittently smokey, ... but it was most always, very windy.

Times of Fog, Smoke and Wind ... acrylic on canvas.

Nicely done Wild Wassa! smile Yes Canberra's renowned for it's fogs, kinda sounds hard to believe it was windy there this past spring... but yes spring is a blustery season across Southern Australia, and it certainly was so here in Melbourne, a bit hair-raising and even dangerous at times, especially in October!! eek
